Video: Road Test of Korean-Spec Hyundai Genesis Sedan

While a large portion of the U.S. media has seen fit to heap Hyundai’s Genesis sedan with praise before having a chance at a steer, the South Korean journalist in this YouTube video is laboring under no such restraints.

In this seven-minute drive-along video, the reviewer takes out a 3.3-liter V-6 version of the Genesis for a run through some mountain roads and highways, and finds the car largely lacking. While we feel compelled to mention that the car being driven is different than what we’ll have available in the U.S., it would be fair to say that this review lowers expectations just a tad. See the fruits of one man’s opinion in the video above, and then tell us what you’d expect from Genesis below in comments.

First of all, can anybody confirm the translation is well done? I feel the video has so much speaking and a few subtitles. Second, remember the test drive is done in the cheapest model so it’s probably you wouldn’t get the best performance. It is like to compare a BMW 525 with a M5. Personally, I’ll prefer to wait until someone performs the test in US. Genesis doesn’t need to be the best car, but at least is a good start for a good price, something some companies couldn’t have done. I am seeing how Hyundai is doing the same evolution as Japanese’s.

Assuming the translation is correct, it sounds like a rather fair assessment of the car. At least he ended on a positive note at the end, which I think reflects the opinions of many people on the Genesis: that this is a positive first step for Hyundai to becoming a luxury competitor. But it is true that we will have to wait for a review of an American spec model to really see how the car is.

Could we please have this guy replace the entire staff at Motorweek?
