Report: Nissan Bringing Diesel Titan To U.S. By 2009
According to a new Reuters report, Nissan will launch an oil-burning Titan here in the States by 2009. Slated to be motivated by a Navistar diesel engine (the same company that has provided Ford with diesels for its F-Series Super Duty trucks), it will be Nissan’s first whirling derv here in America in any segment.
The V-8 diesel’s displacement is unknown, but it will join its 5.6-liter gasoline counterpart in fighting off General Motors’ new Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra twins, and Toyota’s full-size Tundra.
The diesel option can’t arrive fast enough, as Titan sales are in a slide (and have never truly met Nissan’s hopes to begin with). Sales of the big brute are down 15 percent year-over year (through May), and have totaled just 28,668 units this year.

If Nissan gets theirs out first I'll more than likely get this one instead of the Tundra. Hell, no one even knows if Toyota will build a diesel Tundra for sure or not.

The Titan's poor sales aren't indicative of how good a truck it is.
I don't think the diesel will boost sales, personally.

I'm not really interested in their sales numbers. It's a truck that's had all the bugs worked out and will be a mature platform for the diesel engine. If it's the same as the Ford motor, then it'll be a better buy than the if-it-happens Tundra diesel which will need time to mature.

The Titan doesn't seem to have poor sales, having had only 1 wheelbase length, with 2 different cabs.
That's 2 Titan models available.
Compared to other companies which have 18 configurations.
Titan sales are pretty good, given Nissan only offered 2 configurations.
As such, "good" Titan sales should be 1/9th of other companies. Nissan has been able to sell that.

I found out that Titan sales are around 85,000 per year so that's really not bad at all. It may not be where Nissan wants it but considering that lack of configurations, that's pretty damn good IMO.

yep this is the problem.they have just two models 1 wheelbase.if nissan wants to high the sales they need to offer more models, more cabins more wheelbases...and more engines. the diesel is a great idea, but somebody have buy this vehicules first.

Further confirmation that Ford and Navistar are divorce court-bound in the near future?

Genius!! Will get 50% or better mpg, and more torque too!! And can convert to run on vegetable oil! I pray the others follow quickly, which they will have to if they want to stay in the game! (btw, Nissan sold a diesel here a long time ago, in early 80's I believe, a Maxima I think... might have been called Datsun then, though...)
fantasyfreddy
and made in the USA now... that is a big change from 1980!!! will help sales, too!!

Yep, 1983, Datsun Maxima Diesel. Here's the link to a Car and Driver article about "Battle of the Diesel Beaters", in which it was raced cross country against a 1982 Olds and a 1980 Benz. The race was tight, so I don't want to spoil it... here's the link: http://www.caranddriver.com/features/10783/battle-of-the-diesel-beaters.... Enjoy!! ps: I drive an '80 Benz diesel, named Chaya (means life or beast in Hebrew), so i know, these do run like new, forever!! And she is a "Vilda Chaya": Wild Beast!!! (when i was a kid my parents had a diesel Buick, and the engine kept blowin apart because it was built for gasoline!!! silly people!!)

they never bought an American car again after that very expensive fiasco, and now, after a brief unreliable try with Audi, just drive Japanese (a 1990 Lexus, a 1995 Infiniti, and a 2005 Lexus Hybrid)... Sad, the Americans blew decades of sales with one massive disastrous "diesel" engine spread throughout the GM line!!! Very sad!!
fantasyfreddy
I forgot, they did buy one more American car, the same body as the Buick but a Chevy Caprice Classic station wagon, with a gasoline engine. They had it like 10 years, and I think they ditched it at over 200,000 miles. Then she started to fall apart... Not too shabby!!
