First Look - Restyled For 2009 Ford Mustang!!

With the Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Camaro set to once again heat up the muscle car scene, Ford is preparing a comprehensive restyling for its 2009 Mustang, of which this is the first spotted prototype.

Our boys and gals at KGP Photography had but a split-second to grab this mule, which appears to have taken on a lot of design cues from the Los Angeles Auto Show Giugiaro Mustang Concept show car.

(Click through for more shots, a side-by-side comparison with the Giugiaro, and musings from KGP!)

Ford has begun testing prototypes for its 2009 Mustang, which appears
to be destined for a serious mid-cycle makeover. We spotted this
prototype in heavy traffic for all of ten seconds, and managed a
drive-by photo-blitz as the ‘Stang passed by. With only mere seconds
to take in the design as the stop light turned green, the first word
that came to mind was “Giugiaro.” It seems that that first
impression may have been justified, after analyzing the photos once
the dust (and traffic) cleared.

Putting these spy shots up next to pix of the Giugiaro Mustang
concept that originally debuted at the LA Auto Show, we see some
definite similairities between the front-clips of these two cars.
The hoodline on this prototype shares the graceful arc of the Italian-
inspired show car, and a similar wheel arch appears to reside beneath
the camouflage. A sharp, angled character line also appears to be
visible on the prototype’s front bumper, and its angle and placement
matches the Giugiaro concept’s nose detail to a T.

A Giugiaro adaptation of the Mustang would seem more at home at a
venue like the Geneva Motor Show–Italdesign’s usual stomping
grounds–so the fact that it debuted in LA and is currently gracing
the Ford display at auto show in Detroit has raised some eyebrows,
and has begun rumors that the show car’s cues might just be on tap
for the next-gen Mustang. Those rumblings now appear to have plenty
of merit behind them. Now we’re eager to see a prototype that
represents more than an early front-end mule. To see how much of the
Giugiaro concept’s overall shape will be incorporated into the
refreshed ‘09 Mustang is now the next big question. With fierce
competition coming from the new Camaro and Challenger, the facelifted
Mustang may just need show car looks to keep pace.

[…] It appears the Giugiaro Mustang Concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show is a good indication of what the next Mustang will look like when it bows in 2008 as a 2009 model. KGP Photographers snapped the very first prototype mule of the next Mustang in LA and performed a comparitive analysis that shows there are definitely some lines identical to the Giugiaro Stang’s front clip under that camo. We have been operating under the assumption that the next Mustang will also display cues from the Shelby GT500, particularly the Super Stang’s grill that’s wider on the bottom than the top. The Giugiaro concept also features a similar grille. Take a look at the pics for yourself. It’s hard to tell much, but credit the KGP folks for extracting as much information as possible. […]

Ford loves to give their cars new noses as they age. This is fine to do once, but they tend to keep cars around long after a new generation is needed. How many times did they change the nose of the MN12 Thunderbird? Fox Mustang? SN95 Mustang?

This should be the one and only time they freshen the Stang before they replace it with a new model.

Reilly Brennan January 18th, 2007 12:13 PM Link

I’m surprised they appear to be using the Giugiaro concept this much, but I like the direction it’s going.

What a waste of money restyling the current Mustangs front end. How about they give the Mustang Coupe some headroom (raise the roof!) so people besides midgets can ingress\egress without crunching down?
And Super-Handling-AWD would help easy those burnouts, too.
Wake-up FORD. We’re not all 5′9″. Maybe I don’t want to drive a convertable or an SUV all my life.
The only things worse in the world than lack-of-headroom are Daylight Savings Time (useless) and football or basketball(B.O.R.I.N.G.).

Hey Oblio, I’m 6′ 2″ tall and I have no problems getting into and out of my wife’s 2007 Mustang! Maybe you should lead with your butt when entering, and your head when exiting and see how that works.

Don’t even jokingly suggest an AWD platform for the Mustang! It’s a PONY CAR for Christ’s sake, not a European or Japanese Ubercar! Sounds like you need to stick with the Beemers, Audi’s, and Benzes and leave the Mustang to those of us who truly enjoy it for what it is.

Rick January 18th, 2007 4:15 PM Link

I’m 6′2″ and my 06 Stang has plenty of headroom.

I like the path they are going down with the ‘09. I just hope they don’t go with the Giugiaro Mustang’s rear.

I wonder what oblio says … well he must be drunk. first of all the mustang offers a huge passenger room (it ain’t no honda). second,l a 4wd mustang would sound as a Front wheel drive hummer H1, we don’t want our army to drive such crap. third, basketball and football ain’t boring, which make me wonder how you spend your time …….. hmmm … studying !!!??

ford is doing this restyle, then they are replacing the car in 2012, and hopefully get independant rear suspension. the car will be getting less and less retro in the restyling of ‘09 and the overhaul ‘12

Those are some Big wheels on the Mustang, some Nice beefy BBS style 19 inch wheels with some good size breaks, and the center fog lights in the top mid grill tell me thats probably a new style, BOSS model or Shelby model. Also, on the dash there is bulge, like a extra gauge panel simliar to a WRX, so it probably supercharged.

Rogue_G January 19th, 2007 12:14 AM Link

Honestly, as much as the pony style is appealing, it would be really nice if they beefed up the tech on at LEAST the Shelby models. Independent rear suspension, AWD and the high tech computing to back it all up against it’s import competition. It’s all fine and dandy to be beating the domestic competition for muscle cars, but Nissan’s going to have the GTR out soon, and the BMW M series cars are extremely capable. Why not take advantage of the Mustangs value and merge some modern tech to take control of the enthusiasts market as well? Don’t use the Ford GT as an example, that’s competition against the Viper, Lambo’s and Ferrari’s.

With the kind of horsepower these cars can develop with a few bolt-ons, or the Shelby treatment, AWD will eventually be needed to deliver it to the ground. To ignore that, and say ‘Pony cars don’t do AWD’ is just stubborn denial. Pony cars should be about full-sized muscle that can perform — I don’t call lighting up the rear tires a performance (well, maybe occasionally). AWD will be a logical progression, forget what anyone else has already done.

BTW — Why are you all so whiney about a nose job? How many 60’s era pony cars went without modification between redesigns? Don’t you want Ford to keep selling? If they didn’t, the Pony might be put to pasture before 2012.

Rick January 19th, 2007 12:13 PM Link

Ford needs to get away from having plain black plastic as the covering for its sideview mirrors. Even the cheapest Korean car has color keyed side view mirrors.

Very Nice catch guys! I think I prefer the Guigaro Concept over this prototype. Something about the location of the lights throws it a little off. Some mechanical changes to the Mustang would be nice but not an AWD. I just look at the prototupe and can’t help but wonder what would it look like once Roush or Saleen got their hands on it.

Hmm….I need to see more of it to get the full picture of the 09 stang.
Needs more aggressive/original styling not euro imitation. Seems to me more like a larger version of the Scion Tc with fog lights. I can’t stand the front end euro looks.
Bring back the 1970 mustang looks with the side scoops of the fastback, front end styling, and add a shelby billet grill (no more fog lights or trunk lid spoilers please). Clean & simple styling that is American!
Bring back the 302ci, 351ci, and 428ci to get more torque and more horsepower. I know they will fit the engine bay. Ford needs to let go of the small displacement engines 4.2L, 4.6L, 5.4L, don’t cut it anymore!!!! The 350+ Chevys LS2 and 383 Dodge motors are too much for a ford 281ci. IT will be cheaper and better performance wise to add more bore and stoke; than to invest in $3000 superchargers for the mustangs.

People who buy honda/toyota are fools! REMEMBER THE MORE COMPLEX YOU MAKE SOMETHING THE MORE LIKELY IT WILL BREAK DOWN! Those japanese cars are too small and breakdown like every other car. But costs 30% more than domestics to fix them (I am an ASE tech). Just think about the cost to replace the stock exhaust system on a civic with a tuner style catback that charges you $400+ for a 2 inch pipe, only 1 little muffler, and a cheesy 4in tail pipe! Now that’s a crime.

84SVOturbo January 20th, 2007 6:55 PM Link

Ford was the 1st to give the working class people the American V8. DON’T EVER FORGET IT! GM/Chevy later improved on Ford’s design to make their turbofire V8s. That later gave birth to the Muscle car era. Dodge brought in the crazy colors, wings, car names, and the legendary Hemi.
Honda, Nissan, and Toyota never gave the american people anything original. Pink, Lime green, and purple imports with non-function ground effects/spoilers are not original. They just copied what dodge did in the 60s/70s. Turbocharged lawn mower enignes are a joke HONDA!

Has anyone noticed the Giugiaro Mustang looks just like that ugly new 2008 Camaro except for the distinctly Mustang details?

flooper January 24th, 2007 4:43 PM Link

i certainly hope they remodel a little bit of the sides and rear, change the lines a bit… from those pics it looks like just the front end is changed… im afraid that will look like one of those hacked up mustangs with the BMW front ends you find ricers doing all the time.

Also, AWD is good, but if you own a mustang you need to be able to do a nice healthy burnout if somebody asks you too, and also if you have trouble getting traction with rear wheel drive you need to either work on your driving skills or get some real tires on there like some BFG drag radials.

and whoever said they should add more stroke to the 4.6 281… look it up… the stroke on this motor is HUGE already… and oh yea it makes more power than a 302 stock for stock last time i checked…

vader007 January 30th, 2007 5:34 PM Link

I own 4 mustang’s, 1 of about every body style. My 2007 GT is far and above the best mustang ever built. The new chassis is on a new level of build quality. Its a little heavy (70# driveshaft and too much trunk room), which I hope they do away with. 2009’s will come with the fabled hurricane 5.0L modular 24v or 32v V8, dont be scared of a little boost, hows 600+hp with 25mph highway sound? Bring on the bullitt, mach1, boss and shelby models, they will all be great.

CarExpert February 1st, 2007 9:59 PM Link

They look similar… Plain black cover isn’t much that unique. Some variations would do. I just love the Volvo car cover (http://www.swedishpartsshop.com/volvocarcover.html).

Nick February 16th, 2007 4:16 PM Link

That italian designed Mustang looks like crap, and the whole premise doesn’t make sense, the Mustang is an AMERICAN car, if I wanted a car that looked italian, I’d go out and buy an old Ferrari or something.
That hood seems to have a bulge…that better mean a 5.4L(or larger) is sitting under there…watch Ford sit on their hands again…the next GT will probably have the same motor it has now, with a new exhaust system or something.
What I can’t understand is why Ford didn’t put the 5.4L in this Mustang GT, it was obviously designed for it(GT500), why isn’t there a naturally aspirated version in the GT, AT LEAST as an option…Think Cobra R motor with 10:1 pistons and shaker ram air…rated at 400/400…Now THAT would be able to take on the RT’s and the Z28’s…

George Loyd February 20th, 2007 1:49 AM Link

I don’t care WHO designed it. I LOVE the exterior styling! As far as “tech” goes, I would like to see an IRS capeable of handeling whatever HP the big motors dish out. The new Mustangs though are too heavy as it is. AWD and the like would only exacerbate the issue. If it were up to me (I know, it isn’t) I would lighten the platform, bring back a “stripper” 5.0 LX or GTS option and give it anti-lock / anti-spin that could be defeated (or limited) at will. LIfe is not strait, flat or a 1/4 mile long. Give me a light powerfull car that I can stuff into corners! And get RID of that burnt orange paint…

Best car of the bunch bar none!!!Never mind the awd and ind. rear susp. if Carol Shelby says we don’t need it then I believe him. It makes me upset to think that a bunch of know nothings with 6 seconds of experience will blog and praise the virtues of something they truely don’t understand in the application of a Mustang!!!. Leave it alone… keep it simple….keep it cool…keep it fast…keep it afordable….. it will sell!!!! Gee sounds familiar….anyone remember the first go around?

I like the mustangs the way they are. From 2005-and up, and if they change the front grill to a smaller/more sleek openning like what they are showing for 2009, I’ll probably go ahead and buy a Nissan. They finally got a good looking front end and they are gonna screw it up. If they would like to redesign something, put more body lines in the rear of the car. Dont mess w/ the front.

mike May 7th, 2007 7:46 PM Link

john, you just said it all. PLEASE FORD, LISTEN TO US! Put some more shoulder into the rear end and don’t deviate from retro in the front. And nick nailed it with the, we-want-American design protest. But don’t forget, we like a throaty rumble and seat-pinning acceleration. One more thing, we love style, but we don’t like fake scoops/drag-increase devices; leave that for the guys across the Pacific. You know you have it good with the mustang now, and a lot of us hope to have the envy incentive to upgrade every couple of years. But our loyalty is only as strong as yours; remember when you didn’t listen to us during the Mustang II fiasco?

Why doesn’t Ford just sell the Giugiaro concept as a Mercury? That would make everyone happy, and they could get away with charging an extra $10,000 or $15,000 for the Giugiaro doing it that way.

GM did it with their camaros / firebirds.

Darren Ward June 11th, 2007 10:29 AM Link

I think Ford got the Mustang GT just right. Just enough engine power. A few cheap mods and you’re knocking on the door of 330 bhp. Plenty in this platform. Live rear-axle? Keep it that way. This is the reason why the Mustang can be made cheaply. If you start putting in high horsepower engines and intricate suspension… suddenly the car is $5000 dearer. I don’t want that. The whole reason I got the car is because of it’s affordability. It’s a stonking car for the money. That’s the way Ford should keep it. And that haven’t got it wrong… this car is selling by the truckload!!!! Excellent job Ford!!!!

If Ford wan’ts to restyle, leave the front alone. They need to follow the leads they used in the transition between 68 & 69. Where they fattened up the rear end. Honestly the 69 with its scoop behind the door handle was genius and if you wanted you could turn it into a functional brake cooling duct.

Ford needs to put the 4.6 to rest and give us the 5.0 cammer in the GT with 400hp or the 5.4 non-supercharged with 425hp. It’s hard keeping up with the competition when they’re sporting 5.7 to 6.1 liter engines.

there is no worry when the mustang designers offer us a car with a wide swath of options which drives the price up…. the beauty of the top models , always trickles down to the average model on the road,,, and generates the talk,,,
secondly , many of us would work overtime to pay for a stang with all of the extra options,, because we love the car and we love the look ,, and we love the sound….
so ,, rear end suspension options for those of us who drive the car all day,, etc etc would be a most welcome change,,, the more options and the more price variability the better,,, we want the right to build our car , from the beginning , thru the dealer.
while it may be necessary for some people to argue that the stang must be cheap simple and everywhere, the job of a car manufacturer is to offer to the market , a car that reflects the values of its owner, and some of us value speed power, looks AND comfort…..
so lets dream on,,,, tailor made wrap around front seats, super charged, exhaust upgrade options, satelite radio,
i am a consultant to businesses ,, i do not know cars like most of you guys,, but i know what i like, i know what i will pay for and ford looks like they are finally eager to deliver

Only one big problem with the 2009 mustang, the 2009 Hyundai Tiburon (or whatever they call it). It will end up costing around the same, will have a better chassis and suspension and a V-8 with about 300 or more horsepower. I think this will be a big wake up call for the big three when they realize they no longer can build the cheapest pony cars.

Those lines don’t match up at all with the Giugiaro. That mustang under the cover is going to look NOTHING like the orange one. The headlight is curved in the opposite direction. The edge of the nose doesn’t slope in the same direction. You can also see that the prototype has fog lamps on the grill.

that mustang doesnt match with the concept, the headlights are wayyy off, the headlights on the veiled mustang are that of the 2005-8 mustangs, so obviously the mustang concept is not going to be the 2009 mustang

JD May 7th, 2008 7:08 PM Link

The Giugiaro concept is a clean looking car, i like it, it shows progression. I know what some of you hardcore mustang fanatics are thinking “burn him at the stake” well just think about this, how many times has a new body type mustang come out and you thought to yourself i like the old body better? I know i did at first when the 99 came out and i had an 05 cobra. I agree with a lot of the post on this page except for a few ie. AWD. However since the playground has changed the quarter mile sprint isnt the only event anymore so i do agree a new suspension could be a little more corner friendly. Lets not copy legends lets make new ones.
