Audi A5, Maserati Gran Turismo: Separated at Birth?

a5gt.jpg

Pardon us if we're reading into this too much, but the recently unveiled Audi A5 and Maserati Gran Turismo share an uncanny likeness in the posterior. Maybe it's that they're both coupes. Maybe it's that they're both silver. Maybe it's that they're both beautiful.

They were not designed by the same person, and a careful dissection of the taillight design reveals some dissimilarities. But, taken on the whole, we can't help but think these two rears were separated at birth.

What do you think?

While both are pretty coupe derrieres, they are not that similar. Yes, both are silver with branding above the license plate, but see how the top of the Audi trunk curves down at the sides and terminates in the tail-lights, while the top of the Maser trunk is actually a continuation of the rear fender line. Bottoms of the trunk lips differ alot, as do the bumper caps.

The more interesting question is... are the Maser tail-lights lifted directly from the new Ford Mondeo parts bin?

Nathan

Well, as someone pointed out on a previous thread, I'd argue that the new A5 looks more like the BMW 335i in the rear.

mo

I totally agree with tim gottschich. the cars are totally different from the rear. the angle of the rear (where the back windshield and c-pillars is also different) but, besides the name which is taken from the ps game (gran tourismo) I see the tail lights are inverted, with the same shape, of the mondeo.

mo

the last note I meant for the new gran tourismo.

The 3-series link is a good call. Now I that I look at it, it could be a blend of all three!

mo

yeah the new audi a bit look like a sleeker and bigger 3 coupe from the rear

Everyone's (Lexus LS, BMW 335 Coupe, etc) going with these kinda taillights...I guess we'll all start wearing unitards next.

RKinnon

If you think that looks similar.. check out the similarities between the rear end of the '07 G35 and Chrysler Sebring

mo

to RKinnon, chrysler sebring design is one of the worst I've ever seen. it reminds me with the ion from the side. my point is, don't compare anything to that car

Ron R

They look similar but I believe it has more to do with the photography.

Have you seen the rear of the new Acura MDX. Someone at Acura really likes Audi style tail lights. What a copy-cat.

Mo, not trying to be insulting but Italian auto manufacturers were using the term "Gran Turismo"long before Playstation existed.

samuel

Did you see the dashboards of these cars? Surprise surprise, they are identical... Maserati copied the tear-shape clocks of Audi.
