Thanks A Latte, Ford: Mustang To Get Soy Foam Seats

2007-ford-mustang-gt-cs-1.jpg

Ford has announced that it will begin using soybean-based foam in its 2008 Mustangs. The Blue Oval’s eco-friendly material will replace a petroleum-based filler in the seats of its pony cars. The average vehicle uses about 30 pounds of foam, according to the automaker.

The new foam is 40 percent soy and 60 percent oil-based, versus the material used in 2007 models, which is 100 percent oil-based.

The cost to switch over to the new material is said to be a wash, but the technology could start saving the company money when it is applied to more vehicle lines. The material changeover should provide environmental benefits as well, including lower energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions during manufacturing.

Now all they need is a coffee-inspired fabric color for the soy foam jokes to set-in.

One small step for man, one even smaller step for Mother Earth.

Well, at least you know if you run out of gas in the middle of nowhere you can eat your seats.

Mmmmmmmm. Soy.

Actually, you'd only want to eat 40% of the seats. Less filling...
