Report: Volkswagen Working on Driverless Self-Parking System for Production
While Volkswagen was experimenting with self-parking systems as early as 1992’s IRVW concept car (pictured), new reports from Brit magazine Autocar indicate that a completely driverless version of the technology is in the works for production.
Unlike the Toyota developed parking aids, which allow a driver to parallel park a car without touching the wheel, VW’s system is said to do be capable of doing its thing with no human inside the car at all. Maybe we’re just being a little short sighted but we can’t think of too many situations in which that would come in handy.
Nevertheless, VW tells Autocar, “the technology the system uses is all in use today in one form or another. It is now a matter of perfecting the system for everyday use.

When you consider how low the standard of driving can be already I don't really see this as progress!

yeah, they can advertise for it this way "VW's self-parking system for those who don't know how to drive" or "VW's parking system for dummies".

Why, Why, Why? It's called driving. If a person can not master the skills needed to control an automobile including parking it then they need to use public transportation.
This includes lane assist and active collision avoidance. The day I can not keep my automobile in the lane I want it in is the day I'll turn in my license.
I'm also against the incorporation of data recording/loging. My new truck even has it!
We need to simplify automobile architecture not needlessly complicate it to show we can do it.
2500 lbs
manual convertable
5 speed with manual clutch
limited slip
rear 2 wheel drive
250 hp
air con and radio
federally mandated safty devices (nothing but the required devices)
manual windows with vent windows
under $30,000
The world would beat a path to the manufacturer who can build this car.

son in law,
No they wouldn't which is why we have all of this crap in cars. BTW, power windows and locks and A/C are all I want in a car. I have a Solstice and thank God it doesn't have a lot of gadgets. No iPod hookups, no NAV, none of that crap. If you're going to offer people more gadgets, at least make it optional. Of course, this is wishful thinking because consumers demanded that this stuff be standard by purchasing all cars with these options.

Yeah, VW, along with many others, can build these hi-tech goodies, many of which don't or should not make it to production. Whoopie!
My question is, given VW's recent history with elecrical stuff that make english cars look reliable, I don't want my car any where near this thing...

IMO it doesn't matter if you think people that aren't good at parking shouldn't drive, this system can help protect our cars from those peoples cars.
Most bad drivers do not want to change, I fear it is mostly because they think they are doing good enough. Anyway, if you don't like this system, don't purchase the car it will come in. Plenty of other good auto makers out there, and I'm also sure they won't just hand it out to everyone like candy...

I'm on board with son-in-law's general principles; screw this self-parking malarkey. That concept looks really cool, tho. Mid-engined?
