If this is true and they keep the price in the $50k’s as originally predicted, AND they’ve solved the current cars diff and interior issues - look at world!
According to the scribes over at Motor Trend, the next Cadillac CTS-V will be even more powerful than originally thought. The buff book claims that the 2009 sport sedan will receive a version of General Motors’ supercharged LS7 V-8, which should imbue the car with some 600 horsepower.
The 7.0-liter LS7 powerplant, you may recall, is the same basic engine that is expected to find its way into the “Blue Devil” Corvette, though that engine is expected to be even more powerful, with about 700 horsepower.
Despite being down on power compared to the super ‘Vette, the CTS-V is expected to make the new BMW M3 and Audi RS4 look downright pokey. And judging by the spy shots our photographers have captured of some early prototypes, the rest of the package looks to be the business, as well.
+ Motor Trend: Blown! Next CTS-v gets 600-horse supercharged V-8
If this is true and they keep the price in the $50k’s as originally predicted, AND they’ve solved the current cars diff and interior issues - look at world!
The CTS isn’t perfect, but I like it. Two members of my family own CTSs. Considering what came before, the CTS was a big leap forward for GM. The base CTS is a fair compeitior to the Audi A4, Mercedes C250, and BMW 325i. The new CTS looks good and the supercharged 7.0 L engine will catch my eye and ear. Make it a coupe and make me rich and I’ll be a Caddy buyer.
Sorry about the mis-spellings. I’m typing on a Dell 700m laptop!
i second what the stig says. they’re not bad cars, but maybe a better interior and touching up the driveline nigglings, and it would be a rocket. heck, this generations V series isn’t pokey, come to think of it.
and AC, a coupe would be nice, but it’s always fun to pack four people in there, hit the gas, and watch their faces!
i cant help but get the impression that gm thinks they have a world beater with the new CTS. the job of the 600 hp version is to draw attention to the rest of the caddy line.
but yeah, the horse power war has entered a new phase with this one.
While 600 hp would be nice (understatement) I am starting to wonder where this is all going to end. 700 Hp? 800 HP? 1000? Not so long ago, 350 hp was the realm of supercars - now, an Audi S4 has 350.
I was driving my 1990 911 today and while it only has 250 hp, is is relatively light and plenty quick. No traction control, no stability control and lots of fun. Not sure I really need 400 Hp, let alone 600hp. But of course, I will have to drive one ![]()
wow, this is some news. Caddy have long way to go if they want the car to handle. if they managed to make it sharp at corners BMW M and Merc AMG should start kissing their customers good bye.
I, as well, has the same thought as lain. in the last decade we have seen a huge increas in hps, but untill when. everyone knows it is pointless to put so much power without the ability of the car to handle that power.
lain,
I’m with you on that. All that power isn’t necessary. But when is it? A 600 hp CTS-V would give GM a slick hand against a 400 hp M3. I would accept a 350 hp Caddy if it weighed less, but I doubt that’s happening.
It all sounds jolly good BIG POWER!!!. Will it be able though to put all that power on the street? and will it handle so it will not try to go straight, or kill you any time there’s even a hint of a curve on the road???
validate that 600 hp everybody, autoblog.com has the # around 500.
a 600 hp caddy sounds like internal combustion nirvana, it also (to me) sounds like it would be faster than the base Vette (~ 440 hp?).
1) You really think GM would let that happen? 2) With all due respect, consider the source of the data………MT.
Keep those spy shots coming!!!
I like where this is going, but what I’d love to see is a 600 horse power car get over 20 mpg in the city. That would be impressive.
Can someone please clear this up for me? The CTS is marketed against the 3 series, A4, and C-Class right? So why do I read a lot about the CTS competing against the 5 series?
Yuskter2007
I totally agree with you about the reason for not having a 600 bhp CTS. but still even with the 500 bhp CTS-V, the car rocks and roll. as a matter of fact maybe it is better as the extra power might prevent good road handling and so the joy of driving the car.
Carlos,
the thing is that the 3 series, A4, C-class don’t perform like the M5 V10 500 bhp. this is basically why I mentioned the M5. but yeah you are right the CTS is aimed against the 3 series, A4 and C-class.
the cts directly competes with the 5 series, not the 3. its price is more like the 3 but the size of the vehicle is much closer to the 5.
Being published by Moron Trend the news should be heavily adjusted. No way 600 HP CTS-V…
Funny Will,
I like the CTS, I actually drove one for an extended rental (months, long story). But this hood looks like the guys stomach in Alien. Something is about to pop out.
Just don’t let it up on the table.
[…] The bad news for Cadillac’s CTS Sport is the engine is a stock 3.6-liter V-6 engine. There are plenty of visual upgrades, but we’re eager to get more power in one of these sport sedans. At least something to hold us over until the CTS-V gets here. […]
[…] why wouldn’t they be excited? The CTS-V looks to be a shockingly high-performance vehicle, with a V-8 derived from the motor powering everyone’s favorite super-Corvette the ZR1, and looks that make even the toughest M5 look downright bland. (Click on the thumbnails […]
