While most of the spy photographs we publish are pictures of entire automobiles, this leaked photo happens to show one very important new engine…all on its own.

Set up for display at a recent dealer show in Las Vegas, the picture above shows Ford’s all-new 4.4-liter V-8 diesel engine, which is slated to be available in 2010 as part of the Super Duty pickup range. An attendant placard tells us that the power output will be around 340 horsepower with 430 pound-feet of torque. Ford tells us that those numbers represent substantial gains over a 5.4-liter gas engine, including a nine percent boost in power, fifteen percent in torque, and twenty percent in fuel economy.
In addition to the F-150 lineup the new diesel should make its way into the Expedition, Navigator, and new E-Series vans.

Gas mileage should be around 16/20 given a 20% increase. Plenty of torque for a 1/2 ton. I only have 300 in my truck. Another 130 would be awesome. Maybe then I could stay at the speed limit while going up hills. Not to mention the 10,000 lb towing capacity the new trucks have. Anyone out there with a 5.7L Tundra? How does it tow with 8000 lbs or more loads?

30 more hp then the 2009 F-150’s gas 5.4 liter and much more torque, sign me up for one, though I also want to see the baby Cummins Dodge is going to put in the Ram

i wonder if this engine will end up in verious Lincolns as well? it sounds like a versatile engine. i also wonder what took an American manufacturer so long to make the commitment to this type of technology?

Thank God… The current F150’s just don’t have the guts they’ve needed. This should cure that nicely. :-D

Will it carry the $6,895 premium that the 6.4L diesel carries over the 5.4L gas engine? That’s the real issue. How much more will it cost?

Cicero April 14th, 2008 6:52 PM Link

Redshark, they said it will go into the Lincoln Navigator

chartguy,
I think the premium will be somewhere in that neighborhood. I wouldn’t have a problem with paying $30k for a diesel pickup. Much cheaper than a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel.

Cicero April 14th, 2008 9:00 PM Link

Mena makes a good point, but it might have a smaller premium since this engine was built in house instead of being sourced from International/Navistar

Cicero, what i am thinking is a sedan application such as the MKS.

Who cares? Pay a premium for the engine and then pay a premium for the fuel, the numbers just do not work. Most people use a pick-up to haul a bag of bark mulch. If you need more power, buy a F-250/350.

This will be a failure just like the hybrid GM SUV’s, only an idiot will pay 10K more for the privilage of driving a Hybrid Tahoe.

Chrysler will fail with the Aspen/Durango if it comes in at 10K more that the regular version

tenperct,
It will succeed for the same reasons that the present 3/4 and 1 tons succeed. More torque with better gas mileage with and without towing. Most 3/4 and 1 tons get 20 mpg hwy (or more) not towing. My truck gets 16 mpg under the same conditions. I would love the extra 4 mpg and, in my case, 130 lb-ft of torque. Even with the extra cost of gas, I’m still saving at the pump. The price premium is irrelevant because I would be paying $8k MORE to get a 3/4 ton at the same equipment level as my present truck.

Cicero April 15th, 2008 9:05 PM Link

tenperct, maybe you should look at the numbers, a diesel pays off its premium in 5 years, compared to say a hybrid which takes 10 years

Cicero April 15th, 2008 9:06 PM Link

Redshark I think the 4.4 liter V8 is too heavy for the MKS, though a V6 or 4 cylinder diesel would be fine

Ducati Minor April 15th, 2008 11:30 PM Link

Diesel doesn’t pay off in California when its fifty to seventy cents more per gallon than regular-grade petrol as it is now. $4.30 and a $7,000 premium over a petrol doesn’t add up.
