Transport Canada to Utilize Speed-Limiting Device

Speeders in Canada may change their ways, not by their own doing, but by a device devised by Transport Canada.

The device combines a GPS, speed-limit map, and an undisclosed way to manually override a car’s controls.

Transport Canada researcher Paul Boase told the Edmonton Journal, “The technology has the ability of just saying, 'OK the posted speed limit is 50, so we’ll let you go 55, that’s it.

This sucks. Hackers better find a way to override this.

And aren't GPS systems only accurate to 20 metres?

What happens if I take a ramp to a highway and the cars still thinks I'm on a street, thus making it 'impossible' for me to merge with highway traffic?

I guess I would just have to drive old iron with no computer controls.. You can't remotely operate ignition points and a carburetor.

Canada, the land where Ottawa knows what's good for everyone!

Of course, when the father of the head of the Toronto hospital system had a heart attack, she paid to put him in an air ambulance bound for Florida. Dying while you wait in line was good for everyone else, not him.

Too bad they won't make it so that some people will have to do the speed limit and not creep along at 10-15 under.

“That’s why habitual offenders might be the right place to start.

You can't retrofit these to todays cars either. It would require a hardware replacement and no manufacturer is going to pay to retrofit their cars. That would be hella expensive not to mention they'd never get everyone.

good point, bob k. Doesn't sound too awful if limited to habitual offenders, but sounds like this would only be the beginning; opening the door for everyone to eventually be tracked and controlled by the gov't.

no deal.

It's on its way here. American's are growing more and more apathetic towards their governments invasion of their personal freedoms on the street and in their homes. Isn't technology great.

William Patrick

I might add that this "American" trend is very un-American!

this will in no way make it past a trial period. There are way too may "what ifs". It will prevent someone from speeding up to avoid an accident....eg...passing on a two lane highway.

Motor Authority » Canada trials anti-speeding device

[...] “The technology has the ability of just saying, ‘OK the posted speed limit is 50, so we’ll let you go 55, that’s it,’ ” Transport Canada researcher Paul Boase told the Edmonton Journal. Ten volunteers have already tried the device, which for testing purposes was fixed so drivers found the gas pedal difficult (though not impossible) to press if they were over the limit. Boase would like to see chronic speeders forced to use the device, stating that it could potentially come with every new vehicle but that its first application would likely be for habitual speeders. “What you basically find is for drivers who need it the most, they like them the least,” Boase explained. “That’s why habitual offenders might be the right place to start.” Via: Winding Road [...]
