Ford Motor Co. is adding a wireless service to aid police in tracking stolen vehicles.

The dealer-installed SmartAlert from SkyWay Systems Inc. utilizes GPS technology to find a stolen vehicle and sends the location via the internet through cellular networks. Robert Yandrofski, CEO of SkyWay, said the system provides an OnStar alternative to consumers in the market for Ford. He told Automotive News, “We think that we are a perfect complement to Sync as an aftermarket safety and security product.

Why has it taken Ford 3 years to figure out how to do this? Why do they charge to have it installed, when all new G.M. vehicles come with On Star installed from the factory? If they come from the factory with the hardware installed, then even if the current owner doesn't want it, a future owner has the option of having the system activated. It seems like Ford is only half heartedly jumping on a bandwagon.
