Question of the Day: Who Has the Best Forbidden Fruit?

skyline1.jpg

It’s a tough call, but you’re going to have to decide which continent has the best forbidden fruit. We’re not sure if the Japanese domestic market trumps the European-only selection, so you’re going to have to help us sort this one out. Let us know which market has the best products for domestic use only in comments.

Continent-wise? I think Europe has the better Vehicle selection for sure. There are oodles of different special additions available for just about every model, the availability of different tuners and coachbuilders is phenomenal. And a lot of the work that goes into the vehicle is emotionally-based. The designers want you to love the way a car looks. The Engineers want you to get a rush out of driving the car, not matter what it is.
If we'd like to get specific, I like England's choice of vehicles. They get lots of Special Edition models that no other nation in Europe gets. Also, they host some of the best driving roads on the planet, and just in case you'd like to broaden your horizons, drive through the rest of Europe under the English Channel.

By comparison, Japan seems to have a large selection of vehicles as well, but most of them seem to be in the kei-car segment. The market is definitley controlled more by practical inclinations. True, vehicles such as the STi, the EVO, and the GT-R demonstrate the engineering prowess of the Asian market, but more common than not, we'll read of the lack of soul that goes into the drive, lack of feel, and just lack of character. Intangible items that can't really be manufactured.

But that's just my humble opinion of course...

Me. I have the finest grapes on a vine this side of the globe.

Me thinks my grapes comment didn't sit well the moderators.

Well then, I'll go with Britain. I'm sore about the Focus, Mondeo, and the British Civic.

Posing an even deeper question after reading Philly's comment, what gives a car SOUL?

Interesting that I've NEVER read those types of comments when describing those three cars. Maybe I need to pickup a subscription to Muscle Cars Yet Again.

Well, for a Ford guy like me, it's the UK, no question. But I also love the incredible creations that Ultima, Noble, Westfield, and Ariel produce.

I'll go past naming a continent and go to a single nation: France. Citroen may not be the avant-garde starships-on-wheels power it once was, but Peugeot and Renault have made a most envy-inducing variety of deeply compelling cars in the last few years. Examples? The Twingo, Clio Williams, 406 Coupe, and Sport Spider, to name a few quick ones.

I always thought that a lot of the desired ideals for American and French cars intersect (comfort, formal elegance, technology, all-around competence at moderate speeds, etc.). It's a shame the marketing didn't work out right.

And we couldn't even get the Pug 205 back in the Eighties. Life's not fair.

It's Europe, without a doubt.

I dont want to pick a fight but you guys in the US have the best in choice, price and service in the world. The Fords in Europe might look better and maybe there is one or two makes you cant have but so what !!! You pay nearly NOTHING for your cars. The dealerships in Cali, Orange County is as big as some of our towns here in South Africa !!!!!! We pay about $110 000 for a Boxter in SA and what is your price ? Bottom end BMW 3 series - $42000 US!!! Nope you are in car heaven in the US !!!!!

Corco

Australia

Corco

Australia. Similar vehicular needs but a good amount of variety and quality products.

Then as Leo H said, I'd take our market.

Then EU.

Then Japan.

Wes

I like the Holden Utes and the Falcon that we can't have here, but I also like a lot of the JDM only cars.

Australia and North America have the most domestic- only content, but by far Europe has the most diverse and desirable domestic-only vehicles available. Japan is not a continent.

Spastic left click? Seriously, UK, China, Japan, & Middle East are not continents. If you look at the content of today's Question, it asks for CONTINENT.

Japan

The UK just because almost anything is street legal, A Westfield's XTR, Ultima GTR Ariel attom, Nobile, Radical, TVR etc. Here one must kit car them.

Bert

The Title says "who has the best forbidden fruit?" and the Description talks about which Continent has the best. Therefore it's not about a single country.

So I'd say Europe. Why? Because count for yourselves the number of car manufacturers in Europe. Then count the number of cars produced by those manufacturers that have any of the following: track capability, high-performance, exoticness and ultra-expensive. "Forbidden fruit" falls into any of those categories. Now compare to Asia the number of countries that produce cars, and the number of those cars that would fit the "Forbidden Fruit" category? Wayyyy too small to compare with Europe.

Europe just has too many quality "Forbidden Fruit" cars. You could add all of Asia, Australia and US and probably still fall short of the ever-growing list of those cars from Europe.

......But I'd take a Nissan GT-R anyday!.....
