Question of the Day: Which Super Car Would You Remake?

de_tomaso_pantera-gt5hl.jpg

BMW has released its Homage to the M1 super car to the surprise and (mostly) delight of pundits everywhere. And while the Homage may be the newest it's certainly not the first example of an automaker rethinking a super car of the past. Lamborghini conceptualized a new Miura not too long ago and no one will forget the Ford GT remake of the GT40. If you had the means and the whole back catalog of the automotive world at your disposal, which super car would you revisit? Give us your choice, in comments.

I don't know - I would tend to leave them alone and let the legends stay just that. The Miura will always mean one thing to me, as well as the F40, M1, etc. IMO it doesn't show much imagination on the part of the automakers. It's easy to create a high performance car, slap a well respected name on it, then (hopefully) sit back and count the greenbacks rather than carve out a new legend. Then again.....that's probably the idea isn't it? :)

Shelby Daytona Coupe!

I agree with The Stig, remakes of supercars should remain one-off show cars such as the M1 Homage, the recent Miura redo, the Shelby Cobra. The GT40 would be the exception, as a good amount of cars arose from the previous miniscule amount of race cars. That said I'd like to see a remake of Mercedes C111, an experimental car that never made it into production, which makes it eligible, in my view.

Ducati Minor

None.

dante

Supercars are supposed to look to the future. I think the present models are more than retro enough in concept.

Jeff

While I think most legends should rest, including the car I'm about to name, I can't help but think that it'd be cool to redo the Delorean. Give it a real chance, a real engine- think of the possibilities if it didn't have a lame little engine. Wouldn't it be cool to run 0-60 in less than 13 seconds?

dan

shelby AC cobra using the new kr engine and an independent rear suspension. Oh wait they did and I still can't afford it.

Chris

I wouldn't mind seeing a return of either the mclaren F1 though. It would let the man temake his name after the whole MB slr.

Craig

So, - tell me again why there's a photo of a (blue) DeTomasa Pantera used as an illustration in an article about the the BMW M1 Homage?

Cicero

Porsche 928, Lambo Countach, Shelby Cobra, Boss 429 Mustang, Plymouth Superbird

Ferrari 250LM. If you seen one, you may know. If you drove one 47 years ago, you understand.

Cicero

I am also looking forward to the 900 hp Ferrari Enzo that was rumored if true

---Too many to chose from, for now the 1953 Fiat 208-S Siata Spider

Brian

I agree with Jeff, I'd like to see a new DeLorean. I think it was one of the better IDEAS for an automobile. Too bad the actual car sucked.

bepsf

Who needs another Supercar?

Manufacturers should concentrate on achieving comfortable & spacious 50MPG cars - not going from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds...

Cicero

bepsf, just because you hate supercars does not mean the rest of us don't, plus supercars are halo cars that draw crowds into show rooms, and so I do not see a point to your post, you could have just left well enough alone

DieRobotDie

I think there should be less remaking old supercars and more building new ones that remember where they came from. I'd personally like to see Maserati build some sleek machines to complement the Gran Turismo and the Quattroporte.

zbar

When I was a kid the Vector was the sweetest thing I could imagine. It'd be cool to see a new Vector that was up to today's supercar standards.

Sean

Super car: Porsche 959, but it's we're just talking sports GT cars, then the 928.

Mena

None. Leave them alone.

Jonathan Fung

I want to see a new Pantera. A friend introduced me to the car, because he had one in storage, but I just couldn't really connect to it because it sort of not in my time. It seems like a pretty cool car though, and a new one would be cool.

bepsf - Why not get a Tesla Roadster? Then you have both! ;) To answer the question, I'll keep on with the DeLorean. It'd be really sweet to have a classic Jaguar E-Type with all the modern gizmos like a new suspension, ceramic brakes, etc. Not really a remake, but a modernization of a supercar.

Saxman19

Now that Jaguar is doing well again, I think they should try their hand on the next XJ220.

It was a sleek & elegant design with presence and iconic if not wrought with mechanical troubles. I'd really like to see it re-done with the right performance.

I'm imagining something that if kept at the same dimensions will overshadow a lot of current supercars with its presence.

driving course

911 2.7 RS, although I'm not sure it comes in the super class. The trouble with super cars is they tend to be overweight and oversized for driving enjoyment - more pose than action.

Jeff

The 1984-1990 Ferrari Testarossa.

The Stig

Cicero, no one sees any point to half of your posts either so tread carefully. Besides most supercars are NOT built to guide showroom traffic. They're more of an engineering showcase and exercise than anything else.

Cicero

Stig, your always rude and my posts have relevance, whereas, you are a troll

The Stig

At least I know how to properly use "your" and "you're".

Trinks

Even though it wasn't a supercar by today's standards, the Toyota 2000GT has got to be one of the best looking cars to ever come out of Japan. A modern iteration with an all-aluminum inline 6 derived from the Supra's twin turbo mill and you're all set!

Cicero

Wow Stig, your the grammar police

Craig wrote: "So, - tell me again why there’s a photo of a (blue) DeTomasa Pantera used as an illustration in an article about the the BMW M1 Homage?"

Because the article is not about the M1 Homage. It is about remaking a supercar from the past, using the M1 Homage as the example. The Pantera (follow closely, now) is an example of a past supercar that has not been remade. See how that works? ;)

I love the Pantera. Not sure I could stand to see a bastardized modern version of it. I'd love to see another version of the Lancia Stratos. I saw the Fenomenon Stratos on the Wikipedia page, but how about one from Lancia?

dante

The Pantera lasted almost long enough to become retro. Production finally stopped sometime in the nineties. I liked the Mangusta better.

As for Cicero, bepsf's comment was very relevant, but I doubt you're insightful enough to see that, so I'll explain. Supercars are about a company pushing the envelope, showing what they can do with an eye on the future. Fast is played out and doesn't really prove anything anymore. Arguably the first supercar, the Lamborghini Miura, was sophisticated in being so extremely low in proportion with a transverse mid-mounted V12 - something far ahead of the traditional exotics of the time. A true modern supercar would be something that moves the game beyond again - something modern would look towards modern needs for excellent mileage as well as performance through the use of advanced materials and radical design. The high-performance part may not even be necessary to fit, but marketing types would fail to see otherwise. I'd say, if it ever really makes production and it were technically classified as a motorcycle, that the Aptera is a true modern supercar.

Cicero

Dante another troll, like Stig

means98

not exactly a super car but the Lancia Delta Integrale Evo would be an epic return. Get a real hot hatch out on the market none of this "more comfortable" subaru sti crap...
a real super car i'd probably ahve to go with the Esprit

Dino

Alfa-Romeo Montreal. Like the M1, it has just that right amount of 70s detailing that could be reworked into something modern and respectful, like the 'Homage'.
Or, the Jaguar XJ13. What a beautiful supercar that could be with a modern reinterpretation. Could be just what Tata needs to do to show that they understand Jaguar's heritage.

X3 SoB

Yes, Dino, the XJ13! One of most beautiful ever created, and only one was ever built.

Cicero, you must enjoy being a dullard.

Jim S.

At first I thought Pantera all the way. But now that I think of it the Alfa Montreal is what I'm going to go with.

Gary Pighetti

Not "supercars," but BIND I would have died for any of the three:

Intermeccanica Italia

Alfa Romeo 1600 Giulia Zagato on of the prettiest cars on the planet and arguably one of the last beautiful Zagati.

Abarth 750 GT Bialbaro (or was it a 1000cc) Zagato 'double bubble"
