Question of the Day: Which Car did You Dream of when You were a Kid?
Most auto enthusiasts start out young. Many of us had a parent, or older brother, or best friend’s dad who drove a car that made us start loving them. Spanning all class and era, which car made you dream when you were still young? Or if you happen to still be young (not old enough for a license of your own), what car fuels your passions today? Have your say, in comments.

The Pontiac Fiero. Oooooweee. Two of my uncles (on different sides of the family) had 'em. Both guys were the black sheep of the family, the rebels who got all the hot chicks. To me, that car represented bachelorhood.
I know, I know, but I was young and impressionable.

I almost put a Fiero up for the lead image. My mom bought one in 1984 when I was six...I thought it was the best thing I'd ever seen.

Ferraris, mostly. The 308 GTB Quattrovalvole and Testarossa were my favorites. Then there was the Richard Straman Testarossa Convertible. Oh, man. It's still one of my favorite cars.

lamborghini countach. I drew them for every art project from 3rd grade through 10th...then I got into classic cars (30's, 40's, 50's & 60's american cars in general)

Porsche 356 Coupe or Cabrio.
Now that all the baby boomers have them, my chance of ownership is slim. Prices are beyond silly.
My VW Thing suffices, a primordial 356...

Jensen-Healey. As a teen, I thought it was the best combination of old-style British two-seater charm and high-tech (for its time) power plant, with a 2-liter, 4 valve per cylinder Lotus engine. Come to think of it, still sounds pretty good . . .

I was 14 and I thought this car was the greatest. Still has a great pull for me today.
Today I have a 1983 MGB, 1973 Mercedes 450SL, 1965 Cobra (replica),1991 Mercury Capri(actually the most fun).

A Fiat BTM! No really, growing up I liked the Jenson Interceptor, DeTomasa Mangusta, and the Austin-Healey 3000, also the XK-E and Monteverdi. And Lotus Europa Twin Cam. And Corvette. And Miura SV. And Jaguar XJ13...

Corvette, we had 3 in the family.

I too, was a fan of the Lamborghini Countach when I was a kid. The Z cars always caught my eye(which is why I own one), and I also had/have a love for 77'-87' body Chevy trucks...especially short box regular cab. No step-sides.
I LOVE C2 and C6 body corvettes as well.

Ferrari 250 GTO, 327 Iso Grifo, and Bugatti 57SC Corsica Roadster.
1990 & 2001 Miata
In my day, in rural NZ, the Austin Healy was one of the few sports cars of any type seen on the roads. One of my class mates older brothers had one located less than a mile away. It was the only sports car that I saw for many months on end until the NZ GP at Ardmore.
There were lots of big sedans Vanguards, Triumph Renowns, Zepher Sixes, Vauhall Veloxes, 55 and 57 Chev Belairs, Dodge, Ford V8s all owned by neighboring farmers.
The Healy was the highlight and the one I dreamed of having.
My Miata probably is a far better car and captures the essence of the dream without the thirst and engine heat from the 3 litre straight 6.

It was always a bright yellow convertible, possibly a bright yellow Ford Mustang Convertible, and I would be a business exec with a circular driveway with a fountain and a sun deck on my property. I guess I didn't think it through much farther than that. There was a brief time that I really wanted an El Camino, and my folks almost got me a beat up El Ranchero, but I'm glad they didn't.

When I was a kid, going to the annual car show was better than Christmas. I remember in the early 60's Ford was showing the Allegro concept car and I stood there spellbound looking at it. My dad had to drag me away to see the rest of the show. Pontiac was showing a "Western" themed gold Bonneville convertible with steerhide interior and a set of longhorn steer horns mounted on the hood. Ah, those were the days!

When I was old enough to drive in the early '80s we had a barber who lived in our community who had a shop in the "big city" a half hour away, but on certain evenings he'd cut hair for the locals in a little shop he had out beside his house. He was a real car guy, and almost always had an early model Mustang torn apart out in his shop. But he also branched out into dealing in used cars he'd park out front in view of the highway, so it wasn't uncommon for me to drive over there, get a haircut, go out and see what he was working on in the shop, and then test drive one of his latest in the used lot. I'll always regret not buying the '67 Dodge Charger he had out there for awhile, though I probably couldn't have afforded to drive it for very long. He's the guy that taught me to be careful around cars when wearing jeans, so you don't accidentally scratch the paint with a rivet. I ought to track him down and see what he's up to now actually.

I've wanted a Porsche 911 for almost 30 years now. The good thing about that is they just keep getting better. Bad thing is not many young people can afford them.

Now, I'm currently 50 years old. So some of these cars first appeared before I was born or when I was an infant. But love them I did throughout my childhood and formative years.
Ferraris, Maseratis and Lambos? Sure, they were beautiful. But they were so far over the top for my working-class psyche at the time that I rarely thought about them. I wasn't until well into adulthood that I began to pay attention to them.
One last note: I really wish two-door versions of stylish full-sized American cars were still on the market.

Two doors down was a family with five boys. The two after thoughts were my age but the three older boys all early 20s and had great new cars (no idea how they paid for them)...orange 69 Road Runner, 71 Chevelle and 67-ish Cutlass. Four houses the other way was a 71 Mach I Mustang and a 71 Gran Prix. Imagine what they'd be worth today. Of course, they were probably pretty tired by the time these guys were finished with them.
Candidly, what I most like to have today was my Grandfather's 76 Buick Electra 225.

Lamborghini Miura
I worked in a grocery store in high school and this guy would bring his Lamborghini Miura to the store on the weekends. Damn I loved the sound.

having been born in 1975, i am obviously a child of the 80's. ergo, most of my favorite cars also happened to be Transformers.
Lamborghini Countach - Duh. Sideswipe was my favorite Transformer, followed by Sunstreaker.
Lancia Delta - This would be Wheeljack. Thought he was cool, but then saw a picture of the real Stratos. That was it. How cool was that car??
Porsche 911 slantnose - Ok, I thought Jazz was a 911 slantnose (he's actually a 935, the racing version of the 911 Turbo, so close enough). Still, the 911 slantnose was pretty darn slick, and different from the regular 911 to boot.
Porsche 928S4 - Dead End, a decepticon. Hey, he was cool.
Ferrari Testarossa - Miami Vice. Yeah, I know, but still.
Delorean - Back to the Future... Hello!!!
Vector W2 - I had this book called "Dream Cars" or something and the Vector was the last car. It was SWEET.
De Tomaso Pantera - Again, it was all about looks for me. This thing looked MEAN. I first saw it in the aforementioned book and later built a model of it that I got through the Young Modelers' Club. Black. All black. Hotness.

This is a good question!
When I was a little guy, one of my Dad's co-workers bought a gold '68 Mercury Cougar XR7 - That was a great car...
...after that, I wanted the '69 Mercury Marquis convertible that a lady was trading in the day my Dad took delivery of a new '72 Monterey for Mom.
Then there was the neighbor's '71 boat-tail Riviera, various Mark III's, Continentals and Imperials - then we moved back to California and I saw my first Mercedes Benz 450SL - and later the 6.9 - rode in my first BMW 528i and stared at the 633CSi brochure for hours...
Then there was Thomas Magnum roaring around Hawaii in Robin Master's Ferrari 308GTSi (or the Audi 5000 Turbo when he "misbehaved" - Sigh...)

A few additions to my already lengthy list above:
1957-59 DeSoto Firedome two-door
Chrysler 300F
AC Cobra 289
Sunbeam Tiger
Mark
Corvette stingray, 78 Trans am, nissan 280z, mercedes 300sl, ferrari 308
Ducati Minor
What is up with some people listing every car ever built? The questions are singular...
Biro, you have too much time on your hands.
