Question of the Day: What’s the Ultimate Getaway Car?

1969-dodge-chargerhl.jpg

You’ve just done something very, very bad, and need to exit the premises in an awful fast hurry. Which vehicle would you chose as an all-time best getaway car. Pure speed isn’t the only factor here; feel free to impose conditions of style, bulletproofness, whatever you feel would fit the situation. Give us your running from the law pick, in comments.

The perfect get-away car? No question about it. The Mini Cooper S. If you don't believe me, as Michael Cain.

Jim

anything that runs with a police radio jammer

Claus

White ford transit.

Uncle Ron

Something solid that blends. Maybe a highly modified (Mustang engine?) Crown Vic. It would have more carrying capacity than a Mini (which is a very good pick), since you're likely to have accomplices. You don't want to try cramming four guys with big guns into a Mini!

Sol

Ariel Atom

George T

1995 Geo Metro body with wear marks sitting on a dwarf-car like chassis with dual Haibussas and sequential shifting.
Blends in and can out-run anything without wings.
Will not draw attention parked in a Wal-Mart.

an early 90's Taurus SHO. Fast and anonymous

Any late-model Camry. After the first turn, you just blend in with the Joneses.

When I think of a getaway car I think of robbing a bank... SO with that condition it would have to be a S4 Avant. This car has it all; AWD incase of inclement weather, enough power to outrun most local law enforcement vehicles, room for 4 adults, storage in the back for the loot, heated seats and it's a wagon, no cops are going to be looking for this thing.

deKub

Whatever the police are driving.

Robby

Any 1980's Porsche 911. Runs all day at autobahn speeds, without overheating. 22 gallon tank for range. Practically bullitt-proof. ;)

Tim

Merc G55 AMG

Or that Abrams tank :)

dante

Something simple, versatile, anonymous, and fast with decent range that can take some abuse both for curb jumping and ramming things. A big engine is a must for more relaxed sustained high speed and the ability to move a large car throughout the rev range and the possibility to handle additional weight as necessary, be it loot, weapons, or armor plating without much problem. The cars change with time as they should only be a few years old - too old or new attracts more attention.

Chris W

A trio of MINI's in red, white, and blue!

karan

Unimog. No terrain can stop that, whether it be land, sea, air, or other cars.

Or a Caparo T1. It's not bullet proof, but it certainly has the ability to outrun them.

enthusiast

Second Gen BMW M5

bepsf

Audi S8 and Mercedes Benz 6.9
(Didn't you see Ronin?)

bigred

A modified but low-pro, (no wing etc.) STi, with AWD and the manuverability and the way it can blend in would make it a good getaway car. (as long as it wasnt blue or red)

mbslrm

A Ford Transit Connect. I'll keep a motorcycle in the back (anything that's fast will do). I'll take the Ford Transit Connect out first. Before I get on the freeway, I'll just park the Ford Transit Connect and take out the bike. This way they will all be looking for a Ford Transit Connect while I'm a bike. Of course, this plan will only work on small goods.

Trinks

First thing that comes to mind is a Buick GNX. It's just so right.

FPF422

an Audi RS4 Avant...

Ducati Minor

De Tomaso Pantera.

MC

DeLorean. Flux-capacitor, 65 gigawatts, what else could you ask for? Back to the FUTURE:)

X3 SoB

Jensen Interceptor. Really though, a good getaway car would combine the ability to blend in with good performance and handling, currently the choices from the Big Three would be the G8 GT, 300C, and Mustang GT.

Going on vacation to the beach, blog you in a week. :)

Albert J. Pryor

I'm surprised no one has chosen the Ford Falcon used in the Mad Max films.

Zelman

An Abrams was stolen by a former cop and it ended up getting stuck on the freeway. so no way to that.

something quick and common.. Taurus SHO, Buick GNX, Honda Civic.

or a Chevy Caprice wagon with a 454 under the hood.

saxman19

Whatever the choice of car, carry a rocket launcher for the pesky chopper or you'll never make it. Launch it against pursuing cars or traffic to create roadblocks would be fine uses too.

SDX

I don't think the is a "perfect getaway car" but I would probably use Porsche 911 turbo - fast, 4WD, easy to handle, big enough not to get squashed like a bike or Atom and almost guaranteed not to fail when you really need it :)

I like Audi RS4/RS6, Ariel Atom and Ducati Monster options too. But if I would really be in trouble, I would go for lay low and wait approach instead of running like an idiot ;)

Ramoses

i'd have to go for a mitsubishi evo, just take it into a couple of turns n it'll be easy to lost the cops..

Depends on your needs and your location.

Inside the U.S.
East coast...a new'ish Benz of any sort should do nicely for both a simple, "get out of Dodge and worry about nothing else" escape or the long haul cross country run.

West coast.... Prius. Sorry, stereo types are often a safe bet.

Midwest...Early 90's Ford F150, Chevy Silverado, Dodge ram if you're needing to blend and maybe cross a few fields on the cheap. Maybe wanting better mpg's? Ford taurus, chevy Malibu, or a Dodge Stratus. Lincoln Continental or Ford Crown vic work well too.

Now if you want to do it in style...
SL65 AMG
Black c6 Z06
68-70 Dodge Charger
70 Challenger...in white of course
Lotus Elise, Exige, or Esprit TTV8

If you want the WTF? moment from the cops
Gremlin X 401, 5spd, full coil overs
98 Volvo V70 T5 5spd with a few goodies. (much quicker than you'd think.)
Smartzuki!

Shane

Depends on what you've done. If it's a bank robbery you're talking about, you'd want a Ford Transit (that's a van) but if you've just shot someone, take (or steal, it dosen't matter) a Chevrolet Camaro (they're popular with murders)
