The Ford GT followed by the Porsche in the photo.

Son of a Beach

The McLaren F1, followed by the Koeniggsegg CCV, then the Reventon.

The old Ferrari 365 GTB/4 (Daytona) will always have a special place in my heart. I love the front engine, rear wheel drive, rear transaxle layout. The sound of that V12 is perfection. It's totally a visceral choice.

If I used my head, and wanted max performance, I'd vote for the McLaren F1. It's an elegant and efficient design.

Pocky Is God

I will second the Daytona, or F40. Mclaren F1 is the mainstay though.

For me, it's gotta be the Porsche 959. It was just so bizarre when it came out, blazing through deserts with four-wheel-drive. Not to mention that it was forbidden fruit in the US, always worth some bonus points there.

dano

the Porsche Carrera GT is lethal and my fav, but the R8 is what I'd drive daily. I also dream of having a Ferrari Dino in my garage!

Gianni

Ferrari 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer.

Ramsey

Caparo T1 or Ascari A10, then the super Keoniggsig that runs on e85.

Realistically I would love the Ariel Atom.

B

Definitely the Porsche 959.

Simple top three:

* 300sl, roadster please.
Not only can you drive it, it WILL appreciate in value as you do, unlike most other cars, super- or not.

* Ferrari 275 GT/S 4-cam NART Spyder.
Another appreciating drivable asset.

* Series 1 E-type Jaguar OTS
Sexiest. Car. Ever.

Top Speed? 0-60 times? Irrelevant. For cruising public roads it is all about grace and style. The above have those in spades.

F40. The purest road/racing car ever made, and 20 years later still a contender.

BMW M1 is first, then McLaren F1, then Porsche 959, then DeTomaso Pantera (not a supercar, really, but this is my list so I get to pick), Lambo LM002, Ford GT40, then a race-prepped Subaru 22B.

Bruce

Corvette ZR-1. A fast car that can be driven on the streets COMFORTABLY. And it should not get too bad of gas millage.

bmwloco

Porsche 550 Spyder

A true giant killer, and as beautiful today as it was in 1955

hwyhobo

Porsche Carrera GT, a perfect combination of performance and elegance.

almatic

The 959 will always be the one for me.

Steve

Macca F1, no doubt. Followed in no particular order by the CGT, 16.4, and the F430.

mbslrm

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren... lol

Patrick from Astoria

I never cared for the F1's center-seat arrangement, although I am in awe of its engine. I used to worship the 959, but somehow that devotion faded. The Bugatti Veyron is an interesting expression of corporate will and the world's fastest white elephant (appropriately, given the company's historic mascot). And having seen one in real life, I can confirm that the Pagani Zonda is perhaps the most awkward-looking car on the planet. Sorry, boy racers. (And what is the definition of a supercar, anyway?)

Personal Top Five Supercars, Whatever That Term Means(and yes, I know the heading implies a single favorite; like anyone else paid attention):

A matched pair of Ferrari GTOs - one from 1963 and one from 1984.

1969 Corvette L88. Unless I could get one of the two ZL1s.

1986 Lancia Delta S4. (Bow before the master, STi dweebs.)

A street-legal Porsche 962.

And so to bed.

Jaymez

If I had to pick a super car, the Testarosa. The last generation Countach, with the spoilers, would have won if I didn't know it was such a miserable ride. I don't know if the Testarosa is a bad ride. I don't care.

Leo H

Gullwing Merc. A white/silver one with red interior. Bently. Silver coupe with the light brown interior.

Zelman

I went to a Ferrari performance and Formula 1 show at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and the two cars that caught my eye first was the Porsche Carrera GT and an Aston Martin Vanquish.

The Vanquish was absolute beauty in car form, and the GT's engine note sounded more killer and powerful than any V-10 to V-12 I have ever heard. It was like a NASCAR race engine had been enhanced my the perfect talents of German engineering.

Even the Ferrari owners were crowding around the Carrera GT.

David

The Bugatti Veyron is handsdown the ultimate supercar.

David

The Bugatti Veyron is handsdown the ultimate supercar. No one can argue against state-of-the-art technology and gut-bustingly huge acceleration. Oh yeah, no one can argue against the 1001 horsepower, W-16, quad-turbocharged engine, either.

Rimorbod

Here are some of my favorites: Porsche 959, Porsche Carrera GT, Porsche 935 "Moby Dick", Porsche 550 Spyder, Lamborghini Countach, Audi R8.

Aaron

Duesenberg Model J.

McLaren F1

I can't imagine having more fun than in these two cars.

Ben

VMMVMMM, thanks for saying the MINI Cooper S.

Patrick, great mention of the Lancia Delta.

I like the Aston Martin Vantage - It's a beautiful car and a V8 is plenty big for me.

I also like the Lotus Elise - it's a reachable (somewhat affordable) super car, perfect track car, and perfect Sunday driver.

One more would be the Ferrari F430. Another beauty with an amazing soundtrack.

Keith

The Ford GT which is/was truly America's only true exoctic and easily the best looking.

MJK

Lamborghini Miura, it set the exotic styled/ rear engine standard. Followed by the Mclaren F1, showing what technology and an obscene amount of money can actually do.

Actually my favourite would be the 1 of 5 F1 LM, painted in historic Papaya Orange. I'd have to retro fit seats 2 & 3 through!

As for contempory supercars, the Carrera GT gets my vote.

But lets be honest a F430 would be great to drive every day and you would have to worry about rarity (F1 LM) or tiny clutch (C GT).

I can't comprehend having any car that costs more than my house. I'm also a hot rodder, and I think some of the best looking cars built were the 1982-1992 Camaro & Firebird. It is easy to build a 350 gen 1 Chevy small block to get 325-350rwhp, 20+mpg, run on 87 octane, and pass California emission tests. A 1982-1992 Camaro with a C5 or C6 Vette transaxle with a t56, aluminum 427 engine with aluminum heads at about 10.5:1 compression and a modified aftermarket runners and large base should make somewhere above 400rwhp @ 5500-6000 rpm. Convert the Vette rear suspension to coil overs and I should be able to build a Camaro into a super car with a custom interior for under $30k. The car would not be worth what I put into it, but I wouldn't need to spend $100k+ to buy it either.

B-RAD

-Ferrari 288 GTO - IMO the most beautiful expression of the mid-engine V8 Ferrari. and rare too.
-Porsche 959 - the original king of the AWD twin turbo 911's.
-McLaren F1 - the name alone says it all.

the duke

Given that Supercars should not be practical daily drivers, and need a few character flaws so the average dotcom daytrader can't drive one, I'll take the car that actually let to the word "supercar" being coined: Miura. And since its a pipe dream, make it an SV for good measure.

Honorable mention: 250GT Lusso

I never cared for the 'most popular', for me, that in itself devalues itself. Indeed no one can argue about their performance and quality, but the Bugatti is one I wouldn't have, no matter how much money I may have. Oh yeah, the Ferarris go too.

In order:
R8
Gallardo
Aston DBS
SLR
Murcielago LP640 Roadster

luke

BMW M5.

The supercar that isn't quite a supercar. If that doesn't suit you, then:

McLaren F1.

Darryl O

McLaren F1. PERIOD! It's the absolute epitomy of what a SUPERCAR should be. No longer the fastest supercar, since the Bugatti Veyron joined the club, but in my opinion, still the best. The Veyron is a supercar overkill!
