Some days we struggle a bit to think of a solid question of the day, but we thought that this morning’s Max Mosley shocker made the choice simple. Should Mosley resign his position with the FIA? Does the scandalous behavior have anything to do with his ability to lead Formula One? Give us your take on the surprising news, in comments.

Well, he has been a very, very bad boy…

Heh.

If the leadership qualities required to head a major organisation are stretched to include “spectacular errors of judgment”. “being a complete halfwit”, and “absolute untrustworthiness”, then yes, he should stay.

Richard March 31st, 2008 7:33 PM Link

Dr. E., you just about made me spit out my drink…

Max, you’ve damaged the sport, go away.

Trinks March 31st, 2008 7:37 PM Link

I’m not familiar with the guy’s work or reputation, but if he’s good at what he does why should he have to resign? Everyone has skeletons in the closet, and although offensive to some his “recreational activities” are in no way illegal (as far as I know), and certainly not related to his ability to perform his job.

dante March 31st, 2008 7:40 PM Link

Yes. Not necessarily for this incident, but yes. Don’t let the dungeon door hit you on your bare ass on the way out!

Eric March 31st, 2008 7:59 PM Link

Trinks,

So you think a fellow who already has connections with the Nazis, caught in this situation, can effectively manage an international governing body which holds a number of events in countries like France, Italy, England, Spain, Belgium, and other areas devastated by World War Two ?

Including the incredible stupidity of **filming** it?!

Wow…

the footage we all saw today has nothing to do with F1. It has to do with Max’s desires. Period. Max had nothing to do with letting it out to the general public, i’m certain. And so, just because we all saw what Max likes to do behind closed doors doesn’t make him a less effective manager of F1. I am also capable of scandalous
behavior, so are you. We have the fortune of having kept our secrets.

Roland M March 31st, 2008 8:14 PM Link

Of course EVERYTHING you read in the tabs HAS to be TRUE! Even if the video is authentic, he wasn’t charged with any crimes. Someone knew they could get their 15 minutes of fame and a big paycheck at his expense. Like him or not, agree with everything he’s done in F1 or not, he still has the presumption of innocence. Or is that only here in the US?

Jeff March 31st, 2008 8:16 PM Link

Yes, he should. This episode should not necessarily factor into it, as strange and f$&%$ed up as it may be. Just can’t make this stuff up, right? Anyway, the FIA has been giving F1 a bad direction for several years now. F1 is supposed to be the technology leader- and it is obviously not moving that direction right now, with the Engine freeze, 50% cut in downforce, and all the rest (common ECU, anyone? even though the lack of Traction control has made this season pretty interesting thus far). I say he should leave, and good riddance.

The Stig March 31st, 2008 8:36 PM Link

Yes he should, for the sheer hypocrisy of his actions. He openly condemns racism in the sport, while at the same time indulging in reproducing one of the vilest acts of racism the world has ever seen. He has publicly tried to distance himself in the past from his fathers Nazi background, yet this is what he goes and does? It calls his character into serious question as someone in the public eye.

youngturk March 31st, 2008 8:38 PM Link

There used to be a time when true men, gentlemen, had shame and knew when to step down so that positions of authority and leadership could be filled by men who could be trusted to have well-rooted integrity and character. Now, we have men (and women) who follow surveys and polls. Of course, he should step down if he has any respect for the position he was entrusted to serve in.

fstst56 March 31st, 2008 9:13 PM Link

Yes, I think he should step down. But, what do I know? I thought Bill Clinton should have too!!!

speedracer March 31st, 2008 9:52 PM Link

I don’t know about Max, but would you want to continue to work, day after day, with all those people who now know that you don’t have lice on your ballsack and get off on women who goosestep?
What I find most unbelievable, is that after all the videotaped celebrity scandal out there, someone who you think has a good head on his shoulders still lets it happen…makes me question if it’s really him.

BrucinCary March 31st, 2008 9:54 PM Link

You mean he hasn’t already! If he doesn’t he’s two faced, calling the Spanish out for their racism but holding Nazi values! MoFo! Should have known, his Dad was a Nazi, runs in the family.

bepsf March 31st, 2008 10:03 PM Link

He won’t get my vote for President…

hwyhobo March 31st, 2008 10:42 PM Link

I wonder how many of those who would fervently call for Max’ resignation would still vote for Obama despite his cozy relationship with the hate preacher.

Ducati Minor March 31st, 2008 11:50 PM Link

hobo, that’s a big stretch.

Yeah, Max should step down–there are enough weird Europeans. There’s no need to empower them.

Pocky Is God March 31st, 2008 11:50 PM Link

He has Nazi values? WTF? The guy likes rough sex. How does that translate into him not doing his job for the FIA? What utter bollocks. This has NOTHING AT ALL to do with his job performance or responsibilities. What kind of mental gymastics are being made here?

“The man likes to get spanked by women in uniform. That MUST mean that he doesn’t take driver safety or cost cutting measures seriously!”

See the absurdity of what I just typed?

uragan April 1st, 2008 12:30 AM Link

I agree with Dante, but I think he may enjoy that spank. And Roland M., I don’t want to change the subject or offend you, but in the “land of the free” that is not always the case.

Steve April 1st, 2008 1:28 AM Link

Am I the only one that thinks that Pocky might be on to something there?

hwyhobo April 1st, 2008 1:42 AM Link

Steve, no, you’re not the only one. People who don’t mind tolerating truly dangerous tendencies sometimes rise up in indignation when their sense of propriety gets offended (either for religious reasons or perhaps even out of subconscious jealousy - not implying that any of the posters here might have). They then tend to transfer that onto areas that have nothing to do with the source of their indignation just to “get the guy”.

hwyhobo April 1st, 2008 1:46 AM Link

hobo, that’s a big stretch

Ducati, I agree. I find the latter potentially much more dangerous.

Frank Boulton April 1st, 2008 8:39 AM Link

How is old Max going to be able to make a serious presentation any more without everyone thinking of him getting his backside smacked and busting out in laughter. He must go to retain the credibilty of the organization. The jokes will soon start.Bummer !

a_meehan April 1st, 2008 9:59 AM Link

I think there are plenty of reasons Max should step down, and none of them have to do with his private life.

Bad management of F1 and WRC? That’s criminal. Having bizarre fantasies and having the money to live them out? That’s just weird.

If he had Nazi sex with his wife, should he step down? Or is it because it wasn’t his wife? Or is it because we have a video? Or is anything having to do with sex is incompatible with leadership?

Jim April 1st, 2008 10:04 AM Link

If he needs to fulfill a fetish that should be a private affair, If the fetish was about him; cock & ball torture, wearing diapers etc, we could ignore it. But the nature of the fantasy, given the history of Europe and the history of his family will make it impossible for him to do his job. If he doesn’t step down then the directors of F1 will need to force him out.

cheato April 1st, 2008 10:05 AM Link

Mad Max Mosley, that bloke Hermann Tilke, and probably Bernie as well… they all need to go… for crimes against Motorsport.

Richard April 1st, 2008 10:18 AM Link

**Yes. Not necessarily for this incident, but yes. Don’t let the dungeon door hit you on your bare ass on the way out!**

That would cost extra.

MAD MAX

this has been/is a most interesting thread, compared to others.
Where are all the liberal thinkers in Europe hiding when you need one? He should NOT resign because of his sexual predilections but maybe because because he can no longer effectively lead. But then how do you tell the difference?

G-Man April 1st, 2008 1:51 PM Link

This has nothing to do with the act of sex, it is poor judgement to have anything to do with the Nazi history. To top it of he was seeking pleasure in the presence of the Nazi uniform - sorry that is the last thing that should be on anyone’s mind when you see a swastika especially someone with his family history. This is a guy who is turned on by 3 million dead Jewish people.
