Question of the Day: Project Car Edition

waggy.jpg

I'm a huge fan of the project car. Probably because I can usually find them for less than $500 and it's always fun to have a new toy. My latest acquisition, shown above, is a stunning 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. It’s got a running AMC 360 V-8 and one of the power windows works. With only a few minor things to fix, it could see the streets again before the 2008 North American International Auto Show. I have no clue what I’m going to do with it, but at least it’s running now and there aren’t any major fluid leaks.

What is your current project vehicle? If you don’t have a project (or the room/skills/time to undertake one), just let us know what vehicle you’d like to have for a project in comments.

I love project cars, but I can't afford one and don't have room. I see too many project cars that stay as projects forever. You need real dedication and passion. Ideally, I'm looking at a Volvo P1800 or a Jensen Interceptor as my next item in the next two years. Being a Californian, I deal with high fuel prices and eco-awareness. If I'm going to drive an old car with some dirty emissions, I might as well drive one with decent mileage and a small size...even though the Jensen uses a Chrysler V-8 and weighs about 3,500 lbs.

1976 BMW 2002 in pieces in the garage. Daughter was to graduate in 2002 from high school, I did not get it done in time (DUH!!). I went back to school so it sits till I get out of school.

Corco

1976 Subaru 4WD wagon. Bought it for $200. It's got some serious rust problems but still runds like a champ. It's a good little car. Mainly needs serious cosmetic help and a new carb is probably coming its way pretty soon.

Bought it because I was looking for cheap transportation 6 months ago when my real car was in the shop and it was the cheapest running car I could find. Now I've got my car back and nothing to do with the Subie but fix it up, maybe turn it into a good ski car.

My current project is a 1984 Schwinn Predator, but it doesn't really count.

AlfaElan

My '69 Elan is my ongoing project even though the restoration from a basket case finished in 2001.

My current project is my wife's '72 Alfa Romeo Berlina with 2.0L TwinSpark from a '90s Austalian Alfa. It's slowly being brought back to a street and autocross car from a racecar. I just need to find the time and money to find it a dash, door seals, heater, roof liner, upholstry, speedometer, radio......

Jaymez

1987 Chevrolet C10 4x4 with an 8 foot bed.

It's sitting in my driveway right now, waiting for Spring when I can shuffle the cars around. I could start on it now, but, I'd have to leave my other truck outside in order to do that and I don't scrape windows anymore. The '87 has been outside for years, one more winter won't kill it.

It's going to be a rolling memorial to my late father who died suddenly late this summer. It was his truck.

1985 toyota SR5 (sprinter) bought it for 500 dollars put a 1.8 liter engine from the corrolla 1.8 an LSD taken from a 1985 celica along with suspencion pieces and bits. Im having it done bit by bit. The bottom end is done now for the top end of the engine. Im hopeing to turbo the car and have me some RWD fun.

Jose

2000 Mazda Miata. First, I have to prepare the car for the supercharger or turbo I will be installing in it (I am the third owner, the car currently have 124k miles). After that, I have to prepare it for Auto X.

Bruce

1964 chevelle, was working on it as I drove it daily untill this spring, now it's been sitting a while. fun car.

Zach

1992 Toyota Paseo. $600, 160k, five speed. Runs amazingly, engine sounds brand new, just a couple small oil leaks to take care of and it needs paint, its more pink than red now.

Dean

1973 VW Thing... nice, but I center punched it on a stump and it's static now for new front end, fender, bumper.

1971 Dodge D100. Daily driver, cosmetic. Always starts and runs. Slant 6 with an automatic.

1985 VW Westfalia. Camper, daily driver. Mechanically and cosmetically an 8.5.

All my cars are projects. Only the spouse drives a robo-beetle convertible. She can pay the high insurance and make the payments. That's not something I do or care to do.

Russ Bellinis

1987 Firebird T/A. Originally came with a carbureted 305 & 5 speed, it now has a tpi 350 with a 5 speed. Handles about like a late 1950's Vette but with the back seat removed has luggage space like a station wagon for long trips. Body, paint, and mechanicals are pretty much done. The next project is to upgrade the interior. Down the road I plan to install an Air Ride Technologies air suspension so that I can drive the car slightly lowered, but be able to hit a button and raise it up to clear steep driveways and parking lot speed bumps. It is at stock height and some speed bumps in local parking lots are so agressive that the car almost high centers over the bumps!

Oollyoumn

1987 Supra Turbo 5sp with the Sport Roof. $500, 190k mi and no rust. There are many things to fix and a lot of UV damage inside, but it is reliable, and I drive it daily.

My current project car is a Jeep also. A 1995 V8 4WD Laredo, intense blue is the color. Its in good shape except the locked up motor, but hey I only paid $100.00 bucks for it, so no big lose. Looking for a Dodge truck 5.9 to stick in it and make it a off roader.

Ramsey

1992 300zx twin turbo. I just pulled the motor and am rebuilding it with full cryo treated goodies and dished pistons, so I can run higher boost/larger injectors.

I decided to get something built the year I was born,1956. According to the auto mags of that period, the fastest American-made production car for 1956 was the Studebaker Golden Hawk. Faster than the 1956 Corvette, T-Bird or Chrysler 300. I always wanted a Golden Hawk anyway, so I began looking for one. The Studebaker Driver's Club has a swap meet the 1st weekend of May every year at the old Studebaker factory in South Bend and that's where I found mine. That's been 3 years ago. I've gone thru the brakes, installed a rebuilt engine (these came from the factory in 1956 with Packard V-8's) installed new tires and Salt Flat Special wheels. Next comes the interior and body. Lots of fun and parts are not that hard to find.
