Volkswagen U.S. Plant Search Down to Three States

Volkswagen reported yesterday that it had narrowed its list of possiblel locatins for a potential manufacturing facility in the U.S. The German automaker said that a final descision on whether or not to build in the U.S., and where, will come sometime this summer.

VW group of America president Stefan Jacoby (pictured) said on Wednesday that the list of potential locations had been narrowed to Alabama, Michigan, and Tennessee. "We reviewed many excellent sites and the process to narrow down the locations was not an easy one,” said Jacoby.

Jacoby went on to say that the company was evaluating things like site readiness, logistics, and of course cost, as it continues to mull over the U.S. facility. VW has said that the strengthening price of the euro is what’s ultimately driving its move, with the currency’s strength against the U.S. dollar making America a logical target for production.

O.K. I'll lay money down for Alabama. Close to Benz, Close to BMW, close to suppliers. I-85/1-20 Interstate corridor, cheap work force, low cost of living, good weather.

Michigan? I'll lose all faith in VW corporate management. I mean, hell, they moved the corporate offices to Virginia...

Tennessee is a possibility. No state tax, Toyota is already there, as is Saturn.

'Bama.

Jacoby and VOA should direct their attention to taking care of their customers before expanding. View my VW experience at: http://www.reesphotos.com/VW/

I would be very surprised to see the plant built in Michigan given the presence of the auto unions and that VW just moved corporate headquarters to Virgina as previously mentioned.

I believe Alabama will possibly get it. I understand that the Governor's office in Montgomery is already working on this.

I echo John's comment. VW had best learn to foster the relationship they establish with their customers. I don't expect that cars can be perfect; I do expect to be treated with respect and certainly not lied to!!! It is sad, because the VW product could be great if they backed it. Build the plant in my backyard for all I care; I'll never darken the doorway of a VW dealership again.
