Goodnight Sweet Prince: The Chrysler Crossfire Comes to an End

crossfire_hl.jpg

The product axe has started to fall at Chrysler, with the company’s new management sparing no time in their attempts to right the struggling automaker.

To that end, the tenure of the ill-received Chrysler Crossfire has come to a halt, with the last model coming off the assembly line on Tuesday.

(Click through the jump to read the reports of Crossfire's demise.)

One of the more high-profile collaborations between now separated partners Chrysler and Mercedes, the Crossfire was an SLK based coupe and roadster that never really found a home with the American public. Built in Germany, the car’s total production run numbered around 80,000 units in a five-year span. Last year though, U.S. sales of the Crossfire slipped to only 8,216.

Now that Chrysler has warmed up on the Crossfire, look for news of the last Dodge Magnum, PT Cruiser Convertible, and Pacifica in the not so distant future.

Any last words for the dearly departed Crossfire? Let it all out in comments.

You coulda been a contender! You had the looks, but you didn't quite have the moves.

Can't help but think of this song at times like these:

Day by day night after night....blinded by the neon lights
Hurry here hustlin' there....no one's got the time to spare
Moneys tight nothin' free....won't somebody come and rescue me
I am stranded....caught in the crossfire
Stranded....caught in the crossfire.

Tooth for tooth eye for an eye....sell your soul just to buy buy buy
Beggin' a dollar stealin' a dime....come on can't you see that I
I am stranded....caught in the crossfire
I am stranded....caught in the crossfire.

I need some kind of kindness....some kind of sympathy oh no
We're stranded....caught in the crossfire

Save the strong lose the weak....never turning the other cheek
Trust nobody don't be no fool....whatever happened to the golden rule
We got stranded....caught in the crossfire
We got stranded....caught in the crossfire
We got stranded....caught in the crossfire
Stranded....caught in the crossfire
Help me

I almost bought one, until my head hit the roof inside. Who did they plan on selling this to, midgets !

Well, at least no one will be hurt in the Crossfire.

Chrysler's first problem was in pricing. That is a fair complaint. I didn't agree with some of the bad opinion coming from the auto press in reviews. Car and Driver had an obsession with the SRT-6's rear spoiler. I never understood that. It did hurt the Crossfire's smooth roofline, but it didn't wreck the car. The Crossfire isn't a car I would buy, but I commend Chrysler for taking a chance. Like Chrysler's other cars, it just needed extra tweaks to become what it should have been.

The crossfire was actually better than the slk it was based on. Sadly, DCX didn't have a clue how to sell the car, and M-B should have known how to market it! Either Chrysler was given no ad money by the board, or they wasted it. I never saw one single ad for this car in all the time it was for sale. Typical of the ham handed management running(ruining) this once great manufacturer. I'll bet they sell everyone left in stock now that it got some press. I know there are none in Western Canada, when I go to the Chrysler website, they say it is TEMPORARILY out of stock!!
Obviously there is some interest out there. As I am in the market for another vehicle, I may try to find a used one. Chrysler seems to be letting all their interesting product disappear. All the Vehicles I would considerpurchasing have just been killed, Pacifica, Magnum, PT Cruiser convertible. Sebring and Caliber are just plain ugly, Charger and Avenger just plain. I'm getting tired of waiting for this company to get it right, maybe I'll just switch to Ford or GM.
