Ford Motor Company has turned out the lights on its Wixom plant, ending 50 years of Lincoln manufacturing at its historic Michigan facility.

A casualty of Ford’s “Way Forward” turnaround plan, Wixom began building the luxury-branded Blue Oval products back in 1957, when it was known as Lincoln assembly. The Detroit area plant’s final vehicle? A White Chocolate 2007 Town Car.

But fear not, Town Car fans, the luxury cruiser will find a new production home at the Blue Oval’s St. Thomas assembly in Ontario, Canada. The plant currently screws together Ford’s other Panther platform vehicles, the evergreen Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis twins.

I really am surprised Ford is still building these vehicles. The Crown Vic is a bullet-proof large sedan, but it is obsolete in every other respect. Would anyone say Ford’s large sedan compares to the Charger’s power or the Avalon’s refinement? The Town Car is a relic, and Ford should stop lagging behind.

Johnny, I totally agree with you. These cars are dinosaurs. The only people buying these are senile old folks who want to drive a couch and people too stupid to realize what this junk is.

You guys forgot all about the limo companies. They use them also.

I am more distressed about closing another American factory and displacing it’s workers to move to another country and build cars. Who the hell can buy them if you continue to ship jobs out of the country?

I am so glad that the production of the Lincoln Town Car will continue! I have owned several of these vehicles & they are truly fine automobiles! I do not see why the press treats them so unfairly. I currently have a 2006 Lincoln Town Car & I am planning to buy a 2009 model when them come out. I just thought I would let you know. The Lincoln Town Car is one fine car!!

KEEP THE BIG RWD V8 TOWN CAR ON THE ROAD……………

I bought my first Lincoln with 66,000 miles on car. It was a very fine car. I drove it untill $150,000 miles. That engine still ran fine and trans shifted fine. The only thing I had to have done was have the water pump replaced, also ball joints and alignment. The car slid on ice and it was totaled. Me and my wife was uninjured and walked away. This was one very well built car. I slid the car sideways into the corner of a 8 foot stone fence. The fence did not move but totaled the car. The car still ran. I drove it home. If it wasn’t for that big frame and metal, we would have been hurt. I ended up getting another Lincoln. I found an 85 Lincoln Town Car at that time, This one was like new, only had 36,000 miles on it and was kept inside. They just don’t make cars like this anymore, This was the Signature series model and included every option that was offered. I still have that car today. I have put money into it, but it was much cheaper than getting another car. I had traded it for a 94, That was a mistake, The 94 was downsized and the seats were not as comfortable as the ones in the 85, Things were really bad in the 94. The wipers would mess up and finally “catch”. The a/c was terrible. Also, the equipment was “shotty” for this kind of car. The 4.6 Liter engine was a fine motor but it went through 4 quarts of oil between a 3000 mile oil change. Ford said this was normal on this engine. Luckily they still had my 85 on the lot. I took the car back and after 3 days of complaing and talking, they took the car back and gave me my 85 back. It was nice to have my old 85 back, nice and comfortable, with the equipment I liked. I had repairs done to it. It was cheaper to repair mine than to buy the 94. I had the vin number to the 94 and did a check to see if it was still around. That car is dead in a salvage yard. My 85 is still running great. Only has 166,000 miles, many more to go with ease. I love these cars. I hope the new 00’s are built better than the 90’s.

I have owed Chevy, which lasted ok. The frame/unibody rusted enough under the car to cause the motor to shift and broke parts. Car had around 88,000 miles then. It was an OK car. I have owed dodge which was nothing but trouble. It went through 4 transmissions before 50,000 miles, Water pumps wouldn’t last either. The car started to rust at a very early age. The other car was a plymouth sundance. It was an OK economy car and have a neat flip down rear seat for hauling. This car rusted very ealy too. The motor was notorious for leaking oil and the a/c barely worked. The only good thing was that it would run on 15 gallons of gas for 2 weeks. Can’t do that with my Lincoln. The Plymouth developed more problems, kept getting told “nothing wrong” but tranny was going bad at an early age too. A week after the tranny problem, the rear brakes failed. I ended up getting rid of it for safety reasons. My Town car has outlasted them all. It’s an 85 and still running fine, no rust, near mint interior, carpet a little wore near accelerator and brake padal. I know of people that is on thier 3rd car since I got my 85 Lincoln. People have asked me what I did to it to keep it looking so good. I just keep up proper maintanance, wash and wax, oil change every 3000 miles. I love this car. With proper care, I see no reason for this car to run another 100,000 miles. I sure do hope they keep making the big RWD Lincoln.
