Nacimiento-Fergusson Road from Highway 1 on the coast to the Fort Hunter Liggett guard post is about a 14.6-mile run. The road gains around 2700 feet from the Cabrillo Highway to the summit, then descends to around 1400 feet at the fort’s guardhouse.

WINDING ROAD needs your help!

Each month in our magazine, we give readers the chance to share their favorite stretch of twisty tarmac with their fellow enthusiasts. We ask you to describe the route—location, length, terrain, why it’s special to you, etc.—in around 200-300 words.

If we like your submission, we’ll sic our art team on it, and have them work up a map to run alongside your text in a future installment of My Winding Road. Leave us your name and e-mail address for contact information, and you might even find yourself with a highly coveted WINDING ROAD t-shirt. You can submit your entry either by e-mailing editor@windingroad.com or simply by leaving a comment on this post.

Hey, stay away from MY winding road. ;)

The last thing it needs is the side of the cliff littered with pimped out Civics.

Seriously now - that is one gorgeous road. I've been going there for 20+ years. One of the most serene driving spots in California (I'm not telling what the others are ;) ).

Sounds fun. They published my winding road a few months ago (probably THE only interesting road on Oahu) and sent me the shirt, which is pretty slick. Hmm, maybe I'd have to go interisland on the Superferry to find more roads.

I'm going to echo Hwyhobo. Oh, and add--please stay on your side of the (admittedly narrow) road. Some of us opt for two wheels when passing through Nac-Ferg.

hywhobo, c'mon and share. I just move out to CA (Santa Barbara area) and I'm trying to get to know the place.

I've driven Big Sur. It was spectacular, but we started late (my girlfriend didn't want to leave San Francisco too early), so I drove at least half of it in the dark. That wasn't so much fun with a tense passenger and limited visibility.
