Will Mosley Stay on as FIA President?

maxmhl.jpgMax Mosley has been presiding over Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, since he first took the job of president in 1993. His current tenure in that position is set to last through October of 2009, and Mosley isn’t sure what he’ll do after that time.

The 67-year-old Mosley changed his mind after initially saying he would step down in 2004, and claims he’ll need to think “very, very carefully

The Stig

Let's hope he leaves. He has done more harm than good for this sport. He needs to go.

My first reaction to "The Stig's" comments would be to agree, but then if you think about it maybe not. Here's a guy ,Max Mosley, who has been at the helm and instituted more changes than all others in the past. Yet the sport is safer today than ever. I think in large measure because of those changes. I don't like his personal attacks on my hero "Sir Jackie", but that aside he's done a pretty fair job, when you consider the fact that the rules committee is always chasing the technology. Oh yea, I guess $100,000,000.00 is sorta overkill, like a Dr. Evil moment.

Mosley's problem is that he's always thought he was not only the smartest guy in the room, but that he was smarter than everyone else in the room combined. What we've gotten from that is a situation that requires us to go to YouTube in order to see F1 cars pass each other on the race course since we certainly can't see that in a live broadcast of an F1 race these days, except rarely.

And what has Max's response to that been? He's actually argued that modern F1, where "passing" takes place during pitstops is actually superior to all that vulgar stuff that used to happen out on the track. He likes the strategy.

That would be fine if we all thought of F1 as a nothing more than a very loud, blurry game of chess. But for those who actually like drama and emotion in sport, F1 has been a bore for quite some time now. There's gotta be something wrong when some of us (me) prefer "watching" the race unfold on the F1 website's Live Timing section to watching the procession on television.

I must agree that after getting up at 6am to watch most races, few of them keep me awake for the entire race, and yes passing is a problem. The moves by the FIA of late , I think, were designed to put back some of that drama and emotion we all miss. Having been a Ferrari fan forever these last 10 years have brought great joy, however I see and here from the grousing in the crowd that this kind of domination is not the best thing for the sport. It would seem that recent rule changes are trying to even the field , lower budgets and spawn more competition. If I'm really forced to admit it, the color commentary provided by Varsha, Hobbs and Machette on Speed T.V. is what is for me the bulk of the viewing enjoyment.
