Lou Palmer, known and loved as the voice of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network, died on Saturday at the age of 75.

Born in 1932 in Wheeling, West Virginia, Louis A. Perunko Jr. was raised in Syracuse, New York, and had lived in Indianapolis from 1953. Palmer (seen above interviewing Bobby Unser in 1968) spent more than 30 years as the voice of Indy radio, making his first on-air appearance in 1958 at WIBC. He served as chief race announcer for the Indy 500 in 1988 and 1989, going on to call CART races through the mid-1990s.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26 at 1:30pm at Camby Community Church in Indianapolis.
