Ryan Newman Wins 50th Daytona 500

Getting by with just a little help from his friend Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman edged forward at just the right time to take the checkered flag at the 50th running of NASCAR's Daytona 500 last night.

Newman ended a streak of 81 winless races on Sunday, but only after getting a needed hand from his Penske Racing teammate Busch on the last lap. Busch forfeited his own hopes for a Daytona win, by choosing to help block Tony Stewart on the last lap, allowing Newman a clear path to the victory.

Said Newman of his teammate’s move, “Without a doubt, he could have easily gone three wide and split us through the center and made one heck of a mess there going into three, but he chose to be a teammate.

That's great, I love his song "Short People."

Oh, wait, I thought you said Randy Newman.

Yippie - three hours of mind numbing boredom followed by 10 minutes of NASCAR coreographed excitement. The WWE has more credibility than these guys.

Trash the whole series. 2009 begins again with production bodied Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers, and 3 liter, no restrictor plate, engines. Hey, and it could even be called "stock car" racing.

I haven't watched NASCAR for maybe 10 years, and the random nature of the finish reminded me why. There has to be a better way. Maybe they could flip a coin for a set of brackets and then email me the answer?

It's interesting that a series sponsored by Sprint is won by someone sponsored by Alltel. Nevertheless, it is cool to see Penske get a Daytona win.

It was a great race.
Frankly getting tired of comments by people who didn't watch the race.

The open wheel guys got their heads handed to them. again. Of course Villanueve is gone, and Carpentier couldn't quality........

Sam Hornish looked to me to have promise.

Stewart made a very unusual (for him) error, at the end, or he would have won.

Now lets see if this breaks Ryan's slump.......

I still think Kyle Busch will be a top driver.
This year.
