Lexus LF-A Sets Unofficial Lap Record at the Nurburgring

While the testing of the upcoming Lexus LF-A at Germany’s Nurburgring is nothing new, the fact of it running a lap faster than Porsche’s sharp GT2 certainly is.
Reports are claiming an unofficial new lap record at the Nurburgring, courtesy of the 552 horsepower Lexus supercar. The reported lap time of seven minutes, twenty-four seconds, bests the record-holding GT2’s best effort by a second.
Hype for the LF-A, already high, should now see a substantial spike. The record-breaking car is powered by a 4.8-liter V-10 that was co-developed with Yamaha, and is said to rev all the way to 9,000 rpm on its way to an estimated top speed of 210 mph.

What is the source for these times? The stock 997 GT2 hasn't lapped the ring faster than the Carrera GT and the CGT did a 7:28. It's kind of difficult to see how the claims in this article can be taken seriously when none of the times listed are correct.

Will the customer version of this car be as fast? Doubt it. Whereas any of the customer GT2's will be capable of putting in near record breaking lap times.

What a strange looking auto.
Also, lets not discount that the driver's skill is probably around 50% of the equation. The ring is not an easy lap.

Its called a mule.

Why the mention of the GT2 ? I thought the Carrera GT was faster around the 'ring (as stated above) and even that record was just bested by the Zonda F clubsport.

... 7:24?!?! Crikey. That's fast.
Wonder if it's true? Wonder how close to production that was?... I also wonder what the ZR1 is going to do it in...

What matters is the production version in press testing. I keep having flashbacks to the C5 Z06 and the 3.9 sec. zero-to-sixty time no seemed able to hit outside of Chevy.

If the production car gets anywhere close to that time, it will still be great. Remember that this is a Lexus, which doesn't quite have a reputation for building blisteringly fast cars.
What really impresses me is that 9000 RPM redline. That's wickedly high.

Let's hope it drives with a 'soul' and isn't just a faster Lexus.

Stig,
It's rumored that Lexus is presently in negotiations with BMW, to purchase controled quanities of synthesized "Soul". But only for this model. This after similar efforts with AMG broke down.If all these efforts fail, they will revert to their tried and proven ,"Reverse engineering methods". This will, as in the past produce something akin to "Soul", but will not quite hit the mark.
