Johnson Grabs Pole at Daytona 500

daytona-500-hl.jpgThe current king of NASCAR’s Sprint Cup, Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson, will begin his 2008 title defense from the pole position of this year’s Daytona 500.

Johnson grabbed the pole in yesterday’s qualifying session when he recorded a lap of 48.109 seconds at an average speed of 187.075 mph. His time was nearly a tenth of a second faster than second place qualifier Michael Waltrip.

Johnson was able to record the fastest time despite strong winds at the Daytona Speedway. Powerful gusts had served to upset the balance of many cars as they made their qualifying runs.
