While one would be hard pressed to call any BMW M1 “subtle,” this particular 1979 example of BMW’s super car does a fine job of separating itself from even the most spectacular crowd.

Coachbuilt by German tuners Styling Garage Spezialkarosserien for the former prime minister of Qatar, the sellers tell us that this car was designed to incorporate the body kit of a racing M1, with a color scheme that paid tribute to BMW’s ‘M’ division. The very period tri-color graphics may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the overall cosmetic and mechanical condition of the car seems beyond reproach. Bid with confidence.

The colors are dreadful, but the car is a wonder. The 1970s held few wheeled gems–this is one of them. Seeing the price, however, I don’t think the seller is going to lose this from his inventory–a common thing these days.

That air hose is definitely NOT stock. It looks exactly like the exhaust hoses that we clip to our fire trucks so we can start them in the station (OSHA requirement). They’re surprisingly fragile, constantly needing repair.

I saw one at Hardy & Beck in Berkeley. I think it was 1979, if memory serves. Engines were were weak compared to modern vehicles, but this was the pinnacle of BMWs at that time.

I just want to know where to get those killer garage door graphics in the background…

I don’t know about the price, but the car’s in beautiful condition. Those graphics have to go!

No way! The graphics completely make this car. Where is your sense of history?
