Carl Edwards Wins UAW Dodge 400 Among Controversy
Driver Carl Edwards took his second straight Sprint Cup Series win this year, taking the checkered flag in Las Vegas, and grabbing a points lead in the NASCAR premiere series for the first time in his career. The win at the UAW Dodge 400 could come at a very high price however, as NASCAR officials investigate a technical infringement found on his winning car after the race.
During the post-race inspection of Edwards’ winning number 99 Ford Fusion; officials found that the oil tank lid wasn’t properly secured, finishing the race in violation of the rules. While the Roush Fenway driver isn’t in any danger of losing his win, NASCAR has been taking a hard line towards these violations this season, and Edwards’ team could face strong penalties. The car will be transported to NASCAR’s research and development center in North Carolina, where officials will inspect it to help determine if any disciplinary actions should be taken.
Edwards had already faced near disaster twice to capture the Las Vegas win, bouncing back from a pitroad violation in the early going, and narrowly avoiding a second penalty for having a wheel out of his designated pitbox during the final stop.
Said Edwards, "Man, that was a pretty spectacular race car. I was a little nervous on those restarts. I wasn't doing the best job and Dale (Earnhardt Jr.) was doing pretty well all day, so we got real fortunate to hold everybody off.
