Despite persistent rumors about his joining forces with Ferrari, and his team’s lack of pace in the early going, Renault’s Fernando Alonso insists that he isn’t frustrated by less than stellar results in the first two races of the season.

While Alonso managed a fourth place finish in the crash-riddled Australian Grand Prix, he struggled to eighth at last weekend’s Malaysian race. That finish had the Spanish driver talking about the superiority of the Ferrari cars, and many pundits guessing that an early exit from Renault was in the cards.

But Alonso seems to be taking a long view of the situation, believing that Renault will improve with time. “It is something I knew from the winter testing,” he said, “We are not at the level of the top teams, so we need to keep improving.”

For now the Renault driver seems to be preaching patience saying, “It is not the time to give up. It is the time to work even harder than the others, and try to recover the gap. So let’s see in the coming races, in the coming months, if we can do a good job with the car and make it more competitive.”

Will Renault be challenging for podium finishes later this season, or is the team too far behind to hope for anything but long-term success? Give us your insight in comments.

I don’t think it matters this year. My understanding is that next year the formula will require new cars from the ground up except for the engines and universal ecu’s. I doubt that they will get the car running much better this year, but they may be competitive with the new car in 2009.

This year they will not be better than the mid-field they have been getting thus far. Their car is an evolution of the 2007 bore fest and Flavio has already admitted as such. They will continue their pace and 2009 will be when they will reach competitiveness again. Which should be great; 4 teams with very competent drivers all slugging it out will make for very exciting racing.
