The Joy of Vintage Car Ads: Greaser Garage Finds, Scans Pieces from the ’50s
As a middle school student, I hated working on the collage assignment. Simply put, I just don't lend myself well to decoupage, and the subsequent grade reflected that.
There was, however, a silver lining - a trip to the classroom's "collage bin," stuffed full of vintage National Geographics from the 1960s. While my classmates raided the magazines to cut out pictures of scenic locales and Amazonian wildlife, they didn't touch the full-page car ads, giving me a chance to bolster my personal collection.
The Greaser Garage seems to have discovered a similar joy down at their local library. Parsing through a massive library of vintage LIFE magazines, they've cut to the quick by finding - and scanning - old car advertisements for our enjoyment.
The collection, thus far, is limited, but there's still some interesting stuff on the page. We particularly like the piece hawking an early '50s Oldsmobile. Front and center is an illustration of a young couple straddling the fuselage of a speeding rocket. According to GM's copywriters, this is the way to "make a date with a Rocket 8." We'd argue it is also a way to pay tribute to Dr. Strangelove.

And a prescient tribute it was, coming, as it did, more than a decade in advance of the film's debut!
I'm just sayin'...
