We recently brought you an interesting report about Japanese fans of the Akira movie and comic book franchise, building life-sized versions of some of the fantastic motorcycles featured in the story.
Now it seems as if the entire strangely motorized world of the Japanese classic is set to come to life, as Warner Brothers has inked a deal to turn the six-volume graphic novel into a pair of live action movies. Hollywood headliner Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly signed on to produce the films, and anime aficionados will be happy to hear that Akira’s creator, artist Katsuhiro Otomo, will be working with the production in the capacity of executive producer. The first movie is expected to hit theaters in the summer of 2009.
Though no further details have yet been revealed, we’d expect that a live action version of Akira, which stayed true to the original film’s frenetic pace, singular world-view, and blistering machinery, would be a virtual must see.

Gah. Why? It’s a freakin’ landmark in animated cinema. Hey, let’s take Titanic and redo it with a big-haired tiny-chinned Leo character while we’re at it.
YOU FAIL, SIR! GOOD DAY.
Cool build, in that it’s pretty accurate, but it looks better in the anime movie.
BTW - I’ve seen Akira dozens of times… it’s really weird and trippy. I can’t imagine a live action version “working,” even with lots of cool CGI effects.
