Toyota Delays Next Prius, Won’t Introduce Lithium-Ion Cells Until 2011
Confirming an earlier rumor we clued you in to back in May, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Toyota will delay use of lithium-ion batteries in its next-generation Prius, a car originally slated to be launched late next year, but now expected in early 2009.
The Japanese automaker will hold off and use more traditional nickel-metal-hydride cells, apparently out of “safety concerns.

Toyota is in a leadership position and they know they do not need to rush. You can bet when they do roll out the Lion it will be a leap frog effort over all available hybrids.

Wow, Bil...such blind faith in Toyota.

[...] Lutz also stated that “GM expects to have the battery packs ready this fall,” suggesting that A123 and the other aforementioned suppliers for the battery contracts are already well on their way to developing a useful solution. This news comes, ironically, on the same day in which Toyota announced they’d push back the release of their own high-range electric vehicle. Who will win out? Whoever can bring a safe, high-range vehicle to market first and (and this is a big “and”) market it to consumers effectively. [...]

Bil has a bit of a point--there isn't an immediate need for Toyota to install li-on batteries on its HEVs. The Prius and Camry Hybrid are doing fine. Toyota can wait four years.

I can say GM picked the right partner. A123 is the leader in non precious metal Lion. My new BD drill has A123 cells and it is sweet. It has more power than an 18V yet was less than a 9.6V. It will hold a charge for 18 months. One downside, you need to keep it stored at around 75 degrees.
P.S. Blind faith? You don't have to be blind to see that Toyota has been winning the Hybrid race for 10 years. Wait a minute, they have been winning the Lux race with Lexus, the midsize race with Camry, the entry race with Scion. You really don't need any faith at all...
