The Ralph Lauren Collection: A Gallery of Greats

We hope that many of you were able to catch the Ralph Lauren car collection show we hipped you to last week. Cable programming being what it is, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it on the air a few (dozen) more times if you missed it.

As an intermediate step, take a moment from your busy day to peruse this gallery of images from Lauren’s astonishing collection. Everyone should instantly recognize the icons on offer from Bugatti (Atlantic Coupe) and McLaren (the astonishing F1LM) among other greats.

Lauren's prime show piece on the special was the 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 Mille Miglia which won Best-in-Show at Pebble Beach. France's Ettore Bugatti is the Enzo Ferrari of his day, and the value of his cars shows that; yet, it was Alfa Romeo that was Italy's finest marque, and dominated the county's racing endeavors (and handled itself well against Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz), even after World War II. It was Ferrari's dedicated pursuit of victory in the 1950s that crushed Alfa Romeo's status as a world-class marque and bankrupted Maserati. It is nice to look back at a strong Alfa Romeo, and the stunning works of engineering and art that were in its hey day. On a good note, I do see some of that in the coming 8C Competizione--the most beautiful car to come out of Italy in thirty-three years.

Darn. I missed it. Oh well. I can't put names to those cars anyway. Fortunately, I can still appreciate their beauty without knowing what exactly they're called.
