Temperatures Not The Only Thing Sky High In Death Valley
With an average July temperature of 115 degrees, this time of year in Death Valley is unpleasant enough without having to worry about your wallet getting as parched as your throat. But indeed, that appears to be the scenario, as gas prices appear to be rising in lockstep with the mercury.
As these recent photos from Our Man In Death Valley indicate, regular gas is a sobering $4.37/gallon and high-test is nearly $5/gallon at one of the few area service stations. Even oil-burners don’t get off that easy--this Shell station is asking $3.99 for a gallon of diesel, something that can’t make long-haul truckers too happy.

wowzer. that's a lot of money per mile, regardless of your gas mileage.

Long distance truckers aren't allowed in Death Valley.......and because of DV's steep approaches, wouldn't go thru there if they could.

I was just out on the east side of Yosemite about two weeks ago... The cheap stuff was $4.29 then... so this doesn't suprise me all that much. Ick.

Thank goodness I'm still paying $2.99 for regular near my house in Michigan. Across town (10 miles away) the same gallon costs $3.19 at the same time. State and local taxes alone can't account for this discrepancy. Something is not right here.

the jack the prices up because they are probably the only gas station around for miles and miles.

Probably a great way to stick it to all the automakers using DV for hot-weather development testing. But then, wouldn't they have their own supplies?

Holy Tank of Petrol, Batman!!!!

I'm paying $2.93. I'm content.

So what's a gallon of gas worth to you in Death Valley?
Want to reduce your monthly gas bill? Drive less.

Well here in Adelaide, South Australia, we're paying about AU$1.45 a litre for premium unleaded. There's about 4.5 of those suckers in one of your gallons and our dollar is worth US$0.88+ at the moment. Do the math - I think you guys have got it pretty easy 8-)
Ath.
On this side of the Pond we pay $4.4 to $6 per gallon in other words it is about $1,30 per liter (metric system)

mmmmmm....you guys have it good and you don't even know it...I live in Livingston, Scotland, United Kingdom where my local BP station is reselling regular unleaded per gallon @ £0.96 per litre (£4.36 per gallon...$8.72 per gallon!), Premium unleaded is £1.02 per litre (£4.63 per gallon, $9.26 per gallon!) At these prices you guys would be rioting in the streets...
David W
Another thought...for the first six months of 2007 of the year, profits at BP was $10.45bn.

americans should really stop whining about the fuel prices. a gallon of standard euro95 costs 7,69 U.S. dollars in the Netherlands, so if you got to pay 4 bucks for it think about that.
Jay
Euros... how much of that is tax though?

More educational items on fuel prices in the UK for you guys...
British drivers pay two taxes on the petrol they buy at the pump: Fuel Duty and VAT. Of these, fuel duty remains by far the most significant - and remains the most controversial.
If a litre of unleaded petrol costs 85p, 21.7p will be the production costs and profit, around 51p will be duty and 12.5p will be VAT on top of all that.
There is a great graphic at the BBC

No more whining about fuel prices, guys, you got it good!!
Steve
... If our govt tried to tax us like that, we'd throw them out of office... Hence, we don't have fuel taxes like that... Hence, while I feel your pain... You guys don't get too terribly much sympathy from me!
