Survey Finds 20 Percent Admit to Wearing Sunglasses at Night to Avoid Rearview Mirror Glare

There has been an onslaught of campaigns and laws to fight distractions while driving, like banning cell-phone use, etc. But, Gentex Corporation – a dimming-mirror manufacturer – recently conducted a survey of 6,000 new car buyers and found that nearly 80 percent of them view the glare from the rearview mirror as a troublesome distraction.

Garth Deur, executive vice president for Gentex, said, “The higher-mounted headlights of trucks and SUVs, the new high-intensity discharge lamps with the bluish hue, an aging population more susceptible to glare — for these and a variety of other reasons, the problem of roadway glare is reaching epidemic proportions.”

However, the most astonishing finding of the survey is not that 58 percent of those asked said they blocked the glare with their hand (a righteous distraction) or the 50 percent that say they don’t even use their mirror as they tip it down to avoid glare; it’s that 20 percent admitted to wearing sunglasses at night to avoid the rearview mirror glare.

It’s no surprise that a company that manufactures dimming-mirror returned with these findings, but it’s still an interesting topic. Have you ever worn sunglasses while driving at night to avoid glare?

Research Finds Another Glaring Example of Driver Distraction

ZEELAND, Mich., April 29,2004 — Forget about using cell phones, eating fast food, applying makeup or watching in-vehicle entertainment systems. When it comes to driver distraction, the leading culprit just may be old-fashioned rearview mirror glare.

As part of its ongoing market research efforts, Gentex Corporation recently surveyed some 6,000 new car buyers and found that nearly 80 percent agreed that glare from their interior rearview mirror bothers them when driving at night. Similarly, 75 percent agreed that glare from their exterior mirrors is bothersome, with nearly 70 percent classifying the glare as “blinding.”

“For a variety of reasons, there’s more glare on the road today than ever before,” said Garth Deur, executive vice president for Gentex, which supplies the worldwide automotive industry with automatic-dimming rearview mirrors. “The higher-mounted headlights of trucks and SUVs, the new high-intensity discharge lamps with the bluish hue, an aging population more susceptible to glare — for these and a variety of other reasons, the problem of roadway glare is reaching epidemic proportions.”

Deur’s assertions are backed by hundreds of glare-related complaints by drivers to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which regulates traffic safety issues. Glare-related complaints have become so prevalent that last year, NHTSA ranked glare from headlamps among its highest- priority rulemaking action areas for the near term.

But rearview mirror glare isn’t the only issue that has Deur concerned.

“What’s really frightening are the poor driving habits we’re developing in order to prevent glare from reaching our eyes,” continued Deur. “To avoid glare, most of us tilt our head, squint or adjust our body position. However, it’s frightening to say that our research shows that 58 percent of those surveyed block glare with their hand, 20 percent admit to having worn sunglasses at night, and more than 50 percent actually report tilting their exterior mirrors outward or downward to prevent glare from reaching their eyes.

“By now, most people know that driving while using a cell phone can be risky, but I’m far more alarmed to learn that a large number of us aren’t even using our exterior rearview mirrors when driving at night.”

Gentex Corporation, which commissioned the research, has studied glare and ways to eliminate it for over 25 years. Despite shipping over 10 million auto-dimming mirrors to automakers last year, the Company estimates that just 15 percent of the light vehicles built worldwide have interior auto-dimming mirrors, and just six percent are built with exterior auto-dimming mirrors.

Deur said, “Cell phones and in-vehicle entertainment systems — these high-profile driving distractions get most of the attention. But, relatively speaking, most of us do not watch DVDs while driving, yet all of us are confronted by glare every time we drive at night.”

That’s what the little lever on the bottom of the mirror is for. I think they’ve been around since the ’60s, but I haven’t been around that long so maybe someone else knows the history better.

This is why I’m glad that both my cars have automatically dimming mirrors, one even has that on the drivers side external mirror. Great options to get on new cars.

What they aren’t mentioning is that it can be a side effect of corrective vision surgery (e.g., Lasik). The cuts change the shape of the lens, but the scar tissue creates artifacts that can give multiple images of bright objects at night. As more people have gotten the surgery, I suspect it has been an unintended consequence.

Auto dimming mirrors are pretty variable is their effectiveness. That Jaguar was great and always kept the glare down. The mercedes becomes completely undimmed sometimes at night. Not only do I turn the mirror away at night occasionally, I have to turn it away during the day because of day time running lights.

Glare is a much bigger issue than it was in the old days, and with cars that have the old lever system to dim the mirror, I just leave that on dim day and night now. The glare is way too much, and I am only 38.

How old are the cars these people are driving!!?? My first car 1996 240sx has a switch at the bottom of the rearview mirror. Pull the switch towards you and the mirror tints and the glare is gone. Works well at night but during the day the switch have to be pushed back. All the cars I have driven, from rentals and friends that are made after 1990 has that manual switch.

People should understand their cars before driving.

I’ve never been bothered by glare in my rear view mirror. But what is this lever you speak of? I’ll have to go take a look…

I have had a problem with unreliable dimming on the Gentex mirror in my ‘08 Toyota Solara. The mirror will dim, then cease its function all within seconds and with the same set of glaring headlights behind my car. Very unsafe and discouraging !
