Man’s Chevy Silverado Going Where Few Have

People begin bragging about a car when it crosses the 200,000 mile barrier – and some earlier – and occasionally a word-of-mouth story emerges about so-and-so’s uncle’s brother’s car that cracked the 500K threshold. It happens, and probably a lot.

But, a Wisconsin man is 1,200 (or, was at the time of the article) miles away from crossing an unfathomable barrier. His 1991 Chevrolet Silverado is destined to hit the 1,000,000 mile mark on the odometer.

Frank Oresnik told the Associated Press that after the last oil change – which it received yesterday – he was going to retire his trusty pickup. While getting the truck serviced he said, “I feel almost like the longtime NFL player as he goes into his last training camp knowing this is the end.”

(More details after the jump)

Oresnik credits the trucks long vitality to proper maintenance and luck (end of the rainbow, divine-intervention kind of luck, if you ask us).

The durable Silverado did receive some work, including four radiators, five transmissions, and six water pumps – but, the engine has not been overhauled according to Oresnik.

Oresnik uses the vehicle to deliver seafood in three states, and says he drives nearly 85,000 miles a year. Before you get out the calculator, Oresnik bought the truck in 1996 with 41,000 miles already on it.

What’s the highest mileage you’ve accrued on a vehicle? Let us know in the comments.

Currently at 204,000 miles on a 1991 Honda Prelude Si and still ticking right along.

Sometime before this post closes someone is going to beef about this guy having to put 4 radiators and 5 transmissions in his POC Chevy…

Is that a file photo or the actual truck? 1,000,000 miles I can see; looking that good in Wisconsin is a real trick.

I’m just short of 220,000 miles on a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix. engine, trans, radiator, even exhaust all original. Other than three sets of tires and one set of brake rotors [frt and rear] I have only replaced a throttle cable. Hope to put another 80k or so on it.

that truck has texas plates

This photo is simply a stock photo of a ‘91 Silverado as no picture of Oresnik’s truck was available.

A friend of mine just put 315k on a Cavalier. He just gave it away as parts when the head gasket went. He beat the hell out of that car, too.

I have 115k on a 2001 BMW M5… runs like a top

I believe that cars that are DRIVEN are the ones that last the longest. Ones that go tens of thousands of miles a year on the highway AND receive proper maintenance seem to last the longest. Even exotics. Cars that sit around or aren’t driven enough to properly warm up seem to go down the tubes the quickest. While they might fetch the highest dollars on used car lots, IMO I wouldn’t automatically dismiss a high mileage car that received proper maintenance.

Nick - that’s exactly what I’m talking about. And what better car to rack up miles in. I bet you’ve enjoyed every one of those miles too.

I wish my dates lasted that long. The rides are about as brief as a thought from Ron Paul. Maybe that means the problem is with me. Oh well, I won’t put too much into it.

I had a 1964 Mercedes 190D finbody that I ended up parting out in the mid eighties that had 550,000 miles on it. A local marina bought the motor, overhauled the head and injection system, and it still powers a work barge.

I have immense respect for old MB diesel motors. If eBay parts had been around, I would have been able to keep the beast running for who knows how much longer.

1992 Mercedes E-300 280,000 and still making 90 miles a day and 23mpg.Very little on this car that’s not original. The body and paint work look great, through no effort on my part, and I’d not hesitate to take a 1,000 mile trip in it. So in the end, is this not an economy car?

Garrett February 2nd, 2008 3:07 AM Link

Too bad he hasn’t kept track of how many gallons of gas he’s gone through. 60,000? 70,000?

VII February 2nd, 2008 4:36 AM Link

Over 215,000 on my Audrey (’96 Audi A4 2.8Q manual)…

I would still have everything original on her, save for the windshield and one control arm, if my brother didn’t jump her over a curb…The trannie and engine are completely original though, no overhuals there. Anything that I changed was related to the front suspension due to the accident. Oh, the exhaust has kinda been falling apart in the recent year or so, but that’s only because she spent most of her life in Jersey (salt). Since she’s been in South Florida she’s been run hard at least once a day…guess I kinda just blew it all apart.

Sounded bad-ass with downpipes to the ground…although I had difficulty telling when to shift by ear because the sound was the same from 3000rpm to redline…LOL

Yeah, I definitely don’t believe that guy and his American Silverado made it anywhere near 1,000,000 miles…I’ve only heard of MB diesels doing that.

I drove “Vivian”, my ‘71 Dodge D100 Sweptline to work today. 22F, she started.

The speedo has been forever arrested at 63,336 miles since I bought it in ‘91. It’s a retired Dept. of Agriculture truck. The “owner” disconnected the speedo so he wouldn’t have to give up his truck. He drove it until he retired.

I have a remanufactured Jasper Slant 6 put in about 10 years ago, and an updated ‘84 head put on 3 years ago.

Miles? I figure somewhere between 250,000 to 300,000 give or take. But what does it matter? It’s not about miles.

It’s my truck.

I’ve had several cars like that:

1984 Olds Delta 88 - somewhere between 280K and 320K. The odometer died a year before the car did !

1987 Chrysler 5th Avenue - 175K before a family member transhed the engine !

1975 Dodge Coronet Wagon - 198K and still running!

1972 GMC 3500 - 400K (third engine, second trans)

1996 Town Car - 167K - Daily Driver and is putting on between 500 and 1K a week in mileage.

1989 Olds Delta 88 - 189K

I had a 1990 GMC Z71 Stepside just shy of 200,000 (had 64,000 when I bought it in ‘95) and only sold it last year because a cab corner and rocker panel were starting to rust. Didn’t want to do the body shop thing. Truck was still running very, very strong with only one transmission put in around 130,000. I miss the truck everyday.
I’m currently driving a ‘95 Pontiac Grand Prix that is pushing 200,00 miles and still going strong with original tranny. I change the oil reguarly (though not faithful to 3000 miles) using Napa Gold oil filters. Not bad since I only paid $890.00 for it almost 4 years ago and when a girl backed into my front bumper last year her insurance paid me directly $928.00 for the damage. The bottom part of the bumper underneath was only cracked on the corner. Beauty of it is that I don’t care what I look like driving down the road…Gotta love cheap cars!!

I’ve got a ‘93 Chevy K2500 with the 6.5 diesel and 300,000 miles, original engine and tranny, just the clutch had to be replaced 80k miles ago. Also an ‘86 Potiac Parisienne Safari wagon with 230k, an ‘89 Pontiac Sunbird with 218k, and a ‘90 GMC Suburban with about 250k. I only drive GM vehicles, my Toyota didn’t make the 200k mile club when the engine died, but all my other cars do and still run strong.
