GM’s bringing its hybrid pickup trucks to market in 2009, but it won’t be long after when Indian manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra brings its own hybrid truck to the United States. According to PickupTruck.com, Mahindra plans to bring diesel-electric hybrid versions of its mid-sized pickup and SUV stateside by 2010.
Exact details of the hybrids are currently scarce, but John Perez, CEO of Global Vehicles, Mahindra’s U.S. importer, says the diesel-electric variants should be here by 2010 (diesel-only variants may arrive as soon as 2009). There’s no word on what diesel motor may be used, but it likely may be the company’s new mHawk motor, a 2.2-liter I-4 turbodiesel, which delivers around 150 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.
Perez wouldn’t commit to pricing for the hybrid, but he did mention the diesel-electric package will be less than a $10,000 option. Production for U.S.-bound trucks is slated to begin in India around a year from now, but final assembly will occur somewhere in Ohio, helping the manufacturer skirt a 25% tax on imported pickup trucks.
