eBay Auction of the Day: 1981 Volkswagen Pickup GTI

Although there may be plenty who wonder why Volkswagen would build a pickup truck out of a first-generation Golf, there are equally as many who wonder why VW didn't go one step further and offer a GTI variant. One soul apparently took that question to heart, and his attempt at creating a GTI truck now graces the pages of eBay.
We'll give the builder some props, as he did more than just slap some GTI badges on and call it quits. No, underhood lurks a later GTI's 16-valve DOHC I-4, which gives a little more oomph than the standard Golf's four-banger. The large 16" alloys are a modern touch, but they don't look horribly out of place.

But it's not without flaws, either. In lieu of a spray-in bedliner, the builder simply opted to paint the entire bed with flat black Rust-Oleum. We're guessing it doesn't get scratched much, for the lack of an opening tailgate (jammed or rusted, we're not sure) prevents larger object from easily being loaded. For some reason, the interior's missing at least one door panel, and the Blaupunkt stereo, mounted in the dash, isn't hooked to any power or speakers.
It almost seems as if the builder ran out of cash and was forced to abandon his dreams, which also helps to explain the lack of a blower and heater core and the taped-in side vent windows. But, as it's currently priced at just over $700, it's a decent start at building a GTI pickup of your own.

Nice. I have a friend in Florida who is in the process of doing the same; donor GTI rear ended, TDI pickup with toast engine.
If VW builds a plant in the US, wouldn't a Tiguan and Touareg pickup be nice?

A couple of buddies and I built two of these in the late 80's. One was 'stock', the other had allot of mods, limited slip diff, Solid lifters, roller cam, adjustable Konis etc..
Talk about a screaming pickup! Yahoo!!

Maybe he was going for the "Sleeper/Redneck" look.

My friend ran a foreign auto repair shop and he used one as a part getter. Oh what a parts getter it was.
