eBay Auction of the Day: 1969 Monteverdi 375S

1969 Monteverdi 375S on eBay

Combining American powertrain with European styling isn't anything new (Shelby Cobra or Intermeccanica, anyone?), but we have a soft spot in our hearts reserved for the Swiss Monteverdi - and this 1969 375S fits right into it.

The handicraft of former race car driver Peter Monteverdi, the 375S married hand built construction and Italian styling with all-American muscle. Sporting coachwork by Pietro Frua that was arguably the perfect cross between boxy and slinky, the 375S utilized a tubular-steel chassis, with independent coil-spring suspension up front and a de Dion axle out back. For grunt, Monteverdi looked across the Atlantic ocean to Chrysler, who supplied their massive 440 cubic-inch and infamous 426 HEMI V-8s.

This 1969 example is equipped with the 440 and a Torqueflite automatic, and we dare say it's one of the best-looking cars we've seen on eBay in quite a while. The car has only 20,000 miles on the odometer, which may help to (somewhat) explain its condition. We see no lack of luxury inside, with a leather-clad interior which also sports luxuries (at least in its day) like air conditioning and an AM/FM stereo.

That six-figure price tag may seem extraordinarily expensive, but considering only a handful of Monteverdis were made (reportedly less than 1000 between 1967 and 1977), it's not entirely unjustified. If you're looking for the ultimate European grand tourer but can't live without the roar of American muscle, this Monteverdi may be for you.

The biggest problem with owning a Monteverdi is when people see it and say, "What kind of car is that?" Then you get to say, "It's a Monteverdi."

So yeah, you spend $200,000 on a car, and nobody knows what it is.

it has vent windows

dante

Sounds like one of the best things about it to me.

I haven't looked at ebay as to how much this car is going for... but after looking at the stablemates this car has (after looking at the pictures) it can't be cheap. Is that a Mercedes gull wing in the background?

Reilly

I agree with you, Dante.

I live just a couple of miles from the seller location. $199,000 (the fixed price) is a lot to ask for this car. The Monteverdis I have seen advertised in Europe average in price in the same range as a concourse-ready Iso Grifo. The seller isn't accepting lesser bids, and appears to have rejected two offers.

Interesting color. Wonder if it's a repaint; metallics from that era usually aren't so rich.

If you're into celebrity endorsements, Bob Lutz loves his.

It is interesting to compare it with the AC 428 Fastback of the same which also had a Frua body. They are very similar indeed. The AC also came as a convertible.
