Too bad only about ten Americans care about F1. Sadly, I’m one of them.
NASCAR…you won this battle…
Nelson Piquet has been given the civilian version of a drive-through penalty in his hometown of Brasilia, Brazil.
The three-time World Champion and hero of Formula One’s turbo age had his license suspended as a result of numerous speeding tickets and other violations. Piquet will be required to complete a weeklong driving course and pass an exam before privileges are reinstated.
As so often is the case, Piquet’s lead foot runs in the family. It seems his wife Viviane, will be joining him in the refresher course as a result of similar driving indiscretions. Of course, motor sport aficionados will recognize his son, Nelson Junior, as a test driver for Renault’s F1 outfit.
For his part, Piquet seems to recognize the problem saying, “I think we have to pay for our mistakes. It’s not just a speeding problem, I got tickets for all kinds of reasons, like parking where I shouldn’t.” Sounds like a lesson learned to us.

I’m not American but I live in America, so I dunno what that makes me. I care about F1 and WRC - things that Americans have never heard about. I remember I told a few of my friends that Michael Schumacher retired from F1, and they didn’t even know what F1 was… *sigh*
Nelson Piquet!! One of my teenage heroes! His turbo car had 1000 hp!!! I guess after driving that, he still needs the adrenaline rush that comes with it. Maybe more than a driving lesson he needs to ‘rehab’ to normal cars.
Either way, as I used to say back then: Nelson! Nelson! Nelson!
We need to kill this “Americans don’t care about F1″ meme. Just because not all American’s don’t care doesn’t mean that there’s not a thriving, lucrative audience here for things like WRC, F1, etc…
We’re not living in a purely mass-marketing age anymore, and so smaller segments (which are still large because the US is a big place) can and should be addressed by international racing series. Let NASCAR go for the mass market, give the rest of us a choice.
