Could This Gel Product Prevent Damage in Collisions?
Geltec has developed a pretty amazing gel that could possibly be used for bumpers or body panel construction in the future. A thin pad of the beta gel allows a raw egg to fall seventy-two feet without breaking.
We’re not sure that this wonder product will find its way into automotive applications, but it seems like a good way to cut down on repair costs from minor accidents. Well, unless the actual gel isn’t cost-effective in the first place.
(We couldn’t help but think of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer drops a ball of oil off a building as we watched the above clip. Click through to find a YouTube clip of that episode.)

Oh darn. If only I had that gel when we were doing the egg drop project in school. Who needs parachutes and Styrofoam padding?

Does it last in the sun?
Will it turn hard and brittle over 10 years?

But what happens if you run into a glass bowl?

Depends on cost. Even if it doesn't last ten years, it'd be worth it if it is cheap to replace. I sometimes miss the bland black rubber and plastic bumpers from the 1970s and '80s...okay, maybe not.

It would be a great product to add to the dashboard, steering wheel face, and door panels in a car, not to mention as padding for inside of motorcycle helmets and reinforcement for the elbow/knee area of the jackets/pants.
