Beware the British Ice Cream Man Who Smells of Gravy

mashconehl.jpgUK culinary company Aunt Bessie’s (as best we can tell a sort of British Betty Crocker) has developed a slightly off-putting alternative to the traditional summer favorite, the ice cream delivery truck.

Seeking to cater to the palates of Brits who are trying to adjust to increasingly cold summers, Aunt Bessie’s representatives will be offering up the UK staple of bangers and mash served in an ice cream cone. For the uninitiated bangers and mash is in no way like ice cream, consisting of mashed potatoes and sausages, which is then topped with peas and gravy. The company hopes that the easy to handle cone will work its magic to make the potato-based pop a street food that will sell well during Britain’s cool and rainy summer months.

Last year ice cream sales tanked in the UK, falling by nearly seven percent while traditional comfort foods took off. Helping matters along was the fact that the country suffered its wettest summer in 200 years.

Numbers of ice cream vans in the UK have also fallen over the years; in the 1960’s there were as many as 20,000 roaming the British byways, while today just 5,000 or so remain. Aunt Bessie’s hopes to increase that number a bit, even if the product is slightly warm and starchier, by touring cities throughout April, and through the early part of summer.

Ok, let me see if I understand. We are about to see the earth totally become void of life due to global warming, but in the UK ice cream sales are tanking because it isn’t getting warm in the summer anymore!
