They’re in the Money: Flush Porsche Deals Out a Big Bonus

2co.jpgIt seems that while there are hard times all over on this side of the Atlantic, autoworkers in Germany are in for a bit of a treat.

Due to a strong increase in sales followed by record profits, Porsche employees will be receiving an even bigger bonus than they did this time last year.

8,000 workers at the world's most profitable car company will receive a bonus of a whopping $7,350 (5,200 Euros), after receiving $4,900 last year. This special bonus comes as a result of a banner year for the sports car builder; one in which 97,515 cars were sold, and sales rose by 3.4 percent to $10.5 Billion.

With numbers like these rolling out of Stuttgart, it’s hard to question the business acumen of Porsche. Even if its newest project, the controversial Panamera, has raised quite a debate amongst the faithful.

I think China made a great contribution to the Market increase

As the previous poster mentioned, as long as these increases come from new markets, good for them, but they should always keep an eye on oversaturation. Around here German premium cars are more common than Ford cars (and usually competing with Prius owners for parade float duty) and I wonder how long that can continue before there's a backlash.

As long as the Cayenne is around and the upcoming Panamera looks as hideous as it does in these early stages, Porsche won't have the glow it should.

But I still want a Cayman S.

I thought the Cayenne (despite not being a real sports car like the 911) was a massive seller for Porsche. So, while it may not contribute to its glowing image, it's definitly contributing to those growing sales. China doubtlessly contributes a great deal to that too.

i like the cayenne, it is among the sportiest (if not the sportiest) SUVs in the market. if the panamera is sort of the quattroporte of porsche (very sporty, unique sedan) then it will definitely sell. I feel bad because the cayman which has very beautiful lines (I like its design more than the design of the carrera) is intentionally engineered to be slower than the carrera in order to keep the latter as the top model for Porsche.

It makes business sense to build and sell the Cayenne. It has made up a large percentage of Porsche sales this decade. The Cayenne is a good sport-ute--it's just not a good Porsche. Porsche is the builder of sports cars: not overweight SUVs. One would call the Ford Pinto, Chevy Vega, and AMC Pacer successes, too, if determined by sales logic.

Yet we don't.

I feel that 20/20 hindsight in the future will have us look down on the Cayenne period as a negative detour. But, at least, Porsche's cars have been developing smoothly. The 997 has returned the Carrera styling back to the classic mold, the Boxster is still the high mark for roadsters, the Cayman has the nicest backside since the early '70s Riviera, and the Carrera GT was a wonder.

read the release: SALES, NOT PROFITS, are up 3.4% to $10.5 billion! Profits were not released, but are predicted at over $2b the article says...
Also, that number on sales sounds high, as that means they are AVERAGING over $100,000 sales price per vehicle sold.. whoa!!
Even with profits up ONLY $2+ billion, that bonus, although a nice gesture, still sounds weak at about 2-2.5% of PROFITS!! Surely they can do better than that!!

fantasyfreddy, we get zip for a bonus so a company that even gives it's employees a bonus is 10.5 billion times better than a company that doesn't. Who cares if it's "only" 2-2.5% of profits. They got a bonus THEN they got an INCREASE in that bonus the next year. I wouldn't kick Porsche out for eating crackers in bed.

Ducati Minor, amen. The Porsche Cayenne may be a great SUV but its not a Porsche. @mo The best bang for your buck suv IMO is the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Faster, better looks, and much cheaper than the Porsche.
