Japan Report: S2000 Successor to Get Acura Badge?

When we told you a while back that Honda was working on a possible four-seat replacement for the S2000, we were both right and wrong.

Right, in the sense that a design study is now on the way. Wrong, in giving it a Honda badge. We now hear it's set to be an Acura.

If our sources in Japan are correct, Honda is moving well away from the hardcore, high revving uncompromising feel of the S2000, more towards the mainstream with the current proposal also fitted out with a retractable power hard top.

The rear-drive proposal is still at the 'maybe' stage, but we can definitely see a market for a more accommodating S2000 successor, especially with a bigger, better cabin.

Great. Its going to be squishy and boring like the new Miata.

Ugh... No sportscar or roadster has ever survived the transformation into a 2+2 with dignity intact. Please Honda... don't do it.

I think the point was, this is not really a transformation, but rather a new car to slot into the same spot in the Honda/Acura line.

...I think the change to Accura is probably a recognition that they shouldn't take the S2000 that direction.

yeah, whatever, make my true S2000 worth more money! it will become a classic or better yet a legend! It would be nice to remember that Datsun did the same thing with the 240Z of long ago....it grew up, gained some seats that were barely big enough for children and sales went down the toilet! eventually it grew up into a bigger meaner two seater again.

Maybe the Acura ZSX? :)

Great. Now they can rename it the Acura Sebring!

Yea, I am on my second S2000. I went from a 2000 to a 2004 and got all the improvments. Add to that the Comptech SC and exhaust. My car's value is about to stay steady now.

Thanks Honda/ Acura for f'ing up. Now my S2000 will probably always be worth at least $15,000 for the next 10 years!

The Deal

The S2000 is the real deal...a minature beast so any changes with seating capacity will change the ninche market it is in and also make it an instant classic especially the models from 2004 out. They will do to it what they did to the BMW roadsters...make it for the "Sex in the City" Yuppy Chick and weasels who now buy them?

Mr Greg

Didnt Ford try this with the Thunderbird in 1958. We all know how that turned out. Badging anything as an Acura is the kiss of death for a performance car.

Hey, fwd and four seats - that sounds like a fancy Civic.

Maybe if its an Acura it will have the sh-awd and a larger engine. 3,000lbs, 330 hp, and awd would be nice.

Kris

Well I love the S2000 the way it is now, but if I look at Mazdas RX8 which turned out very well indeed, the idea from Honda could be interesting. I just hope S2000 will remain unchanged and Honda will come up with a new kid on the block.

Andy

Road & Track predicted a pretty unusual outlook for Honda's S2000 and NSX successors. I'm glad Honda is taking some risks and opening itself up to fresh ideas. I don't think the four-seater approach will happen, since it would cancel out the S2000 in the roadster market. The S2000 had itself a clean spot in the North American market ahead of the Miata and behind the Boxster in pricing. The S2000 may not be a great sports car, but it is a good one. Honda has a lot to lose adding two seats, more weight, and a higher cost. The roadster market is getting itself packed.
