Spied: 2010 Lotus Esprit!!
Our new friends over at AutoGespot have captured what is probably the best look yet at the next Lotus Esprit. The range-topping supercar has seen its development hampered by fits and starts, but it appears the car is on-track for a 2010 debut despite the setbacks.
We don’t have many firm details on the coming Esprit yet, but sources peg the engine as a BMW-sourced V-8 displacing in the range of 4.4-to-4.8 liters. The car is expected to spawn an open-top variant at some point, but we’re only expecting the fixed-head coupe at launch.
Figure on around $125,000 for the privilege.

First, let's hope the car isn't five years old once it finally launches way too late and with a rehashed last-generation engine, plus overly niche-o-rama looks and usability. Not to mention the traditional British shoddy assembly.
Second, it would be great if they showed it just as it appears in these shots. Cause a stir and screw with people. Lotus needs something special and new to happen sometime, but so far I see nothing jumping out at me to make me care much. Too bad that all of their remarkable heritage points are wasted due to lack of funds to actually create a car company. For Lotus is to Proton as Volvo is to Jaguar: a source of cash to avoid death while holding up proper new car development at the more successful marques.

What do you mean, wasted? Beacuse of the somewhat soft Europa? Have you ever sat in an Elise? Do you know anything about it? Lotus has maintained their origin purity and founding principle far longer than Porsche or Ferrari. If the Esprit lives up to half its promise there won't be anything to stand in its way.

Hmm... yeah yeah the long lost Esprit .... why not risk yourself driving a fake Ferrari? I'd rather be seen having a Prancing horse with that kinda styling and profile......

I'd be happy to take any non-believers for a ride in my Elise anytime - I'm in LA. Lotus has stayed true to their heritage, and is still making fantastic cars. Let me know when you want to go for a ride. - cj

Bad news........This is NOT the new Esprit....I used to work for the company that is developing this vehicle and a Lotus it is not

It doesn't look like an Esprit to me. Maybe I'm an oldies fan, but it's tough to improve the brilliant shapes created by Giugiaro and later updated by Stevens. I can only hope it doesn't end up as a inflated Elise or (horror) just another lawyer's-commitee-designed vehicle.

I think that the hood is bigger on the Lotus this time because they're packin' a bigger engine.

You've got to be kidding right Mr. Sprat? Shoddy workmanship? Ever taken a Lotus Elise for a spin. It hauls ass and beats up cars that cost 2 to 3 times as much.
I think you may have Lotus confused with those vehicles British Leland use to make (Triumph,MG,etc).

Amazing how many experts there are out there who haven't a clue what they are talking about!
This IS NOT A LOTUS. Also there is NOT a BMW engine in it!. but i dare say the web experts will say i'm wrong.............all i will say is, wait till the new lotus is launched, then you will see this is not it!. (it's not a mule either!)
