schumacher-motogphl.jpgJust weeks before the launch of the 2008 Formula One season in Australia, a wild hare of a rumor has started making the rounds that seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher is hankering to make a return to racing, though this time in the saddle of a MotoGP sport bike.

French newspaper L’Equipe published an article, which speculated on a possible Schumacher wild-card entry for the MotoGP race at Mugello this year. It’s known that Schumi has twice shown excellent pace (shocking, we know) testing for Ducati, but new reports say that the F1 hero may have recently taken the saddle again at the Circuit de Bresse in France.

The French report goes on to say that an affiliate of Schumacher paid a visit to the MotoGP HQ in order to secure permission to enter the Mugello race.

So far the MotoGP brass are roundly denying the story to anyone who’ll listen, but consider our interest piqued. How do you think the former champion would fare on the back of a Ducati? Have it out in comments.

He’s not going to do that. What does he have to prove? The guy likes racing in all forms and all vehicles, and he has the clout and connections to play with anything he wants. MAYBE he just wants to hotrod a bike around the track? Nothing wrong with that. He has more money than many small countries, a consulting deal with Ferrari worth eight figures a year, and broken every record in F1. He’s just playing around folks - like everyone else in his shoes would be doing too.

Maybe him and Rossi can swap rides for a day. I think a Honda will win the MotoGP crown when its all said and done, Hayden is really coming around on the new bike.

Ducati Minor should have a comment on this!

Michael can ride and certainly knows racing. All sporting events have become quite dependent on viewer ratings and popularity, so I’m sure Dorna would consider something like this that would generate a huge amount of curiosity. I think the main objection would be if the other riders could trust his moves. With all due respect to Schumi’s considerable talent, four-wheel racing isn’t the same as two wheel. People’s lives and careers are in the balance (pun sort of intended) and the fact that it’s entertainment shouldn’t come before safety. MotoGP is the best of the best, and as such the other riders need to be able to race all out without worrying about a rookie doing something unexpected. An unlikely consideration would be if he did well enough to take some points and deprive someone of having a better overall season. But probably in that situation they’d say that his points wouldn’t count.

Achieving the skill necessary to win in Moto GP requires many shunts on the way to finding your limit. Schumacher is no fool and he knows at 37 years old he doesnt need this risk. I don’t believe, or hope, this is a serious endeavour.
