The undulating curves and dramatic elevation changes of Germany’s famed Nurburgring Nordschleife have long inspired comparisons to wild roller coaster rides. New plans for a ‘Ring-themed amusement park adjacent to the famed racetrack look to bring those comparisons to life.

Scheduled to open late in 2009, German publication AutoBild is reporting that the planned theme park will include a go-kart track, a science center and museum, an event hall, and a new 5000-seat grandstand. But the unquestionable star of the park will be a blazing new roller coaster built to simulate the sensation of conquering the Nurburgring itself.

Powered by compressed air, the super-fast coaster is said to be capable of accelerating to its top speed of nearly 135 mph in just 2.5 seconds, actually faster than a typical Formula One car. The roller coaster will stretch for a length of about three-quarters of a mile.

Is a theme park next to the Nurburgring a great way to educate the next generation of motorsports enthusiasts, or a possible blight on the historic track? Have your say in comments.

This can’t be a good thing. I see a bunch of tourists with kids coming to the ring wanting to do laps in their family sedans to the point where traffic is so bad a sub 8 min lap will be impossible!

I like it. It’s a way to:
1) make racing a family event
2) possibly bring in new fans

Something similar already exists in Japan, and seems to be quite popular: Twin Ring Motegi

I think its a good idea. I personally don’t think I’d ride the roller coaster, but I think the go kart track is nice for kids who can’t drive real cars yet. I remember driving go karts when I was little. It was great.
