POLL: 74 Percent of Londoners Disagree with New Congestion Charge
Last week we told you about Porsche’s effort to fight London Mayor Ken Livingstone’s impending £25 daily congestion charge. The company has even started a Web site to provide Londoners with a voice to contest the charge.
Well, Porsche also polled Londoners on whether they agree with the charge or not. No surprise, 74 percent of Londoners oppose the congestion charge. But, the poll was more revealing.
Sixty-four percent of those who voted for Ken Livingstone in the last mayoral election believe the charge is too high, compared to 34 percent who believe it’s at the right amount or not high enough, according to PistonHeads.
The poll also revealed that 81 percent believe the congestion charge will have a negative effect on business in downtown London. On top of the 74 percent that believe the £25 charge is too high, 68 percent feel the current £8 charge is also too high.
Andy Goss, Managing Director of Porsche GB, said, “Londoners agree that the Mayor’s plans to introduce a massive new charge for larger vehicles is totally unfair and is more about squeezing money out of motorists than trying to help the environment. The Mayor should take the chance to reconsider his plans before he leaves us with a system that risks damaging London and irritating massive numbers of people.
