Land Rover Investing Big in Lower Emissions
Land Rover has been known for many things throughout its history of premium SUV production, but environmental consciousness has never really been one of them.
The perception of Land Rover as building high polluters is in for a bit of a revision, as the company has announced plans to improve its image by lowering carbon dioxide emissions across the range.

Setting a target of lowering CO2 emissions by 20 percent over the next five years, Land Rover will partner with Jaguar to invest £700 million ($1.4 Billion) for a range-wide greening. The goal is to meet or exceed EU emission standards for the entire fleet of vehicles by 2012.
Land Rover has already initiated advances focusing on environmental concerns; launching carbon offset programs and showing stop-start engine technology. With the massive new investment the company has plans to develop a baby SUV and implement hybrid engine options for future models. Use of aluminum and other weight saving measures are in the works as well.

On top of that, Land Rover should invest in making reliable and lighter vehicles, as well. Maybe that'll save its place in the market instead of being at the bottom of reliability studies.

Let's hope Land Rover and Jaguar live long enough to meet these goals.

Wonder where they are planning to get the $1.4 billion from? Certainly not Ford, who has mortgaged off its factory property just to stay alive. Perhaps this is a way of Jag/LR telling future owners the level of investment needed for them to remain competitive?
