European Fords Get Duratorq Diesel Engine
Lovers of European Ford products now have another reason to loathe the offerings from the domestic arm of Ford. The Duratorq is a 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel that packs 175 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
Besides respectable power, the Duratorque also maximizes fuel economy without giving up much performance. A sprint to 60 mph should take about 10 seconds and a Duratorq-powered Mondeo could see 38 mpg. Not a bad compromise, really. A diesel particulate filter keeps emissions in check and CO2 emissions are relatively low.
The Duratorq engine is also used in Peugeot’s 407, 407 coupé, 607, and 4007 SUV, plus Citroën's C6 and C-Crosser. The engine was designed in partnership with PSA.

Even though the name is silly, it would be nice to have these engines in the States. The low-down torque of a diesel would be suited for most people's (non-hooners') driving styles anyway.

10 sec 0-60mph? How much does that car weigh?

@Mena- it weights about 3000 pounds. the base gas-powered sedan weighs 300 pounds less than the base diesel, but does 0-60 in almost 12 seconds (1.8 seconds slower than the diesel sedan with a stick).
current Mondeos with the 2.0 Duratorq can do 0-60 in well under 10 seconds and get about 39 mpg (48 mpg with imperial gallons), so i'm not sure what the advantage of this new engine is, unless you want to tow something with a family sedan...

The CO2 factor could be kept tolerable, but what about NOx? The 10 sec. zero-to-sixty time would have to improve. Existing diesels in America (Jeep comes to mind) have had sluggish speed numbers. High torque is fine with a truck, but there is little sense with a saloon or estate.
How much is the new 2.2 L turbo-diesel Duratorq projected to cost with the Mondeo? Moving up to the base TDCi will run you at least £17,000. The 2.0 L Duratorq engine and 6 spd. auto gearbox costs £19,000. That cost isn't very much. It's about on par with an almost fully loaded Mazda6 sedan here.
